Anthropic, a leading AI company, has significantly increased its cloud commitment to Google, pledging at least $121.3 billion between 2026 and 2033. This substantial deal bolsters Google Cloud’s impressive revenue backlog, valued at $560.8 billion.
While Anthropic shows strong revenue growth and short-term payment capability, future large commitments pose a long-term risk. Nevertheless, Alphabet’s stock appears reasonably valued, with Google Cloud demonstrating robust performance and significant growth potential driven by AI partnerships.
Alphabet Stock: AI Cloud Deals Boost Google's Future, But Risks Remain
Artificial intelligence powerhouse Anthropic, known for its Claude AI, recently updated its IPO filing, revealing significant financial commitments that have direct implications for Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG), the parent company of Google. Anthropic's updated filing on November 2nd shows substantial third-quarter financial figures, including approximately $132 billion in cash and short-term investments as of September 30th.
Anthropic's Massive Commitments to Google Cloud
A significant portion of Anthropic's total purchase commitments, which amount to approximately $895.4 billion primarily for compute and infrastructure, is directed towards Google. The latest filing indicates that Anthropic has committed to spending at least $121.3 billion with Google Cloud between April 2026 and July 2033, regardless of actual usage. This is an increase from the approximately $114.5 billion mentioned in the previous filing.
This substantial commitment represents a considerable portion of Google Cloud's revenue backlog, which stood at $560.8 billion as of September 30th. Anthropic's commitment alone accounts for about 22% of this backlog. While Alphabet does not disclose the exact portion attributed to Anthropic, this single customer's commitment highlights the growing importance of AI infrastructure for Google Cloud's future revenue streams.
Spread over more than seven years, Anthropic's minimum commitment averages roughly $16.5 billion annually. This figure represents about 13% of Google Cloud's current quarterly sales, which reached $30.7 billion in the third quarter, marking a 103% year-over-year increase. Furthermore, Anthropic estimates it could spend an additional $125 billion to $150 billion on Google's custom AI chips, although some of these costs may involve third-party providers.
Assessing Anthropic's Ability to Pay
Anthropic's financial health appears robust enough to meet its short-term obligations. Approximately $69.8 billion of its commitments are due within the next 12 months. Its current cash and investments provide ample coverage for these immediate needs, even before considering its untapped credit line and potential IPO proceeds.
The company has shown strong revenue growth, with third-quarter revenue reaching about $17.0 billion, a 47% increase from the previous quarter and more than twelve times its revenue from the same quarter last year. Operating cash flow has also turned positive, reaching $6.6 billion for the first nine months of 2026, a significant improvement from a negative $2.0 billion in the prior year's period.
However, there are signs of cooling growth and significant expenses. The third quarter saw an operating loss of $567 million, partly due to $2.0 billion in non-cash charitable contributions. Compute and infrastructure costs also rose to 58% of revenue in Q3, up from 48% in Q2, though still down from 148% a year prior. Looking ahead, the substantial commitments due by the end of 2030, totaling around $447.5 billion, will require significant revenue growth from Anthropic to be met. The company itself acknowledged in its filing the need to "grow our customer base and expand revenue rapidly in order to generate the cash flows necessary to satisfy these commitments."
It's also worth noting that Google has agreed to provide up to $20 billion in financing, which could potentially mean that some payments Anthropic makes to Google might originate from Google itself.
Alphabet Stock: A Look at Valuation
Despite the uncertainties surrounding Anthropic's long-term payment capacity, Alphabet's stock may still present a compelling investment. Shares are currently trading at approximately 19 times expected 2027 earnings, a valuation that is about 31% below its 52-week high. Moreover, Google Cloud demonstrated strong operational performance, generating $11.1 billion in operating income in the third quarter, a threefold increase compared to the previous year.
The author suggests viewing the near-term Google commitment from Anthropic as solid revenue, while the longer-term commitments represent a bet on Anthropic's growth trajectory. Ultimately, Alphabet stock remains an attractive option at its current price, buoyed by its cloud division's strong performance and significant AI-driven partnerships.
