Broadcom’s stock experienced a significant drop after its latest earnings report, primarily due to AI chip revenue guidance falling slightly below market expectations, despite overall revenue beating estimates. This pullback, however, may represent a strategic buying opportunity for investors who recognize Broadcom’s foundational role in AI infrastructure and its robust software business.
An options strategy involving selling a put and buying two others, along with a call, has been identified to define risk while capitalizing on a potential stock rebound. The company is viewed as more than just a chipmaker, but a critical architect of internet connectivity and AI data center functionality.

Broadcom's recent earnings report presented a mixed picture for investors. While the company surpassed revenue expectations, its forward-looking guidance for AI chip revenue fell slightly short of the "whisper numbers," leading to a significant stock price drop. This presents a potential buying opportunity for those who can look beyond short-term market reactions.
Despite the stock's 15% plunge, Broadcom delivered a highly profitable second quarter. Revenue reached $22.19 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $22.13 billion. The primary concern for investors appears to be the projected $16 billion in Q3 AI chip revenue. While this represents substantial year-over-year growth, it missed the unofficial "whisper numbers" which were around $17 billion. CEO Hock Tan's conservative outlook on this figure, without an aggressive hike or hype, triggered immediate selling by algorithmic trading programs.
Adding to the short-term pressure is the slower-than-anticipated recovery of Broadcom's legacy, non-AI businesses, such as enterprise storage and broadband routing. For momentum traders, a "stable and gradual" pace isn't as exciting as explosive growth.
However, it's crucial to understand Broadcom's core business. It's not merely a cyclical hardware chipmaker. Broadcom operates as a "fabless" infrastructure giant, possessing a valuable intellectual property portfolio for data connectivity and custom silicon. Combined with its substantial, recurring, and high-margin enterprise software business from VMware, Broadcom designs the fundamental architecture of the internet. While Nvidia is recognized for the high-profile GPUs that crunch data, Broadcom provides the essential designs that enable these GPUs to function cohesively within AI data centers. Without Broadcom's engineering, an AI data center would be a collection of disconnected, expensive silicon.
Given this analysis, and with support at the $400 year-to-date level, an attractive entry point has emerged. To capitalize on a potential rebound in this high-beta tech stock, a defined-risk options strategy has been employed:
- Sold the AVGO $400 7/17/2026 put for $22.75
- Bought the AVGO $370 put for $9.75
- Bought the AVGO $430 call for $17.75
This strategy, costing an investor $5, effectively defines downside risk while offering unlimited profit potential above $435 should AVGO rebound. At the time of establishing this spread, AVGO was trading around $405.
Disclosure: Kilburg's Mango Growth ETF (GARY) has recently purchased shares of $AVGO. The author is also long this options spread.
