British counter-terrorism police are reportedly investigating a possible connection to Iran following an alleged bomb threat targeting RAF Fairford, a critical U.S. Air Force base in the west of England. The incident, which unfolded over the weekend, led to the arrest of five men on Sunday near the base on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses.
RAF Fairford serves as a pivotal command outpost for U.S. Air Force operations from Europe and has been utilized for American strikes against Iranian missile sites. This strategic importance makes it a focal point in regional tensions.
In July, Iran's Revolutionary Guard issued a warning that any base used in air strikes against the Islamic Republic would be considered a legitimate target. Iranian ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi had previously stated that allowing U.S. bombers to launch from the Fairford base was an "important matter for our self–defense."
According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, U.K. police sources suggest that Iran is the most probable state actor behind the alleged plot. If Tehran's involvement is confirmed, these sources indicate that Iran is unlikely to have relied on criminal proxies, as it may have done in past incidents, hinting at potentially more direct state involvement.
When questioned about the prospect of Iranian involvement on Monday, U.K. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting cautioned that it would be "very unwise" for him to speculate at this stage.
This development unfolds against a backdrop of stalled negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Tehran's conditional offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, leading to an apparent stalemate. Despite this, Trump indicated in a Sunday interview with Axios that he anticipates U.S. negotiators will engage in further talks this week.
