Authorities in the Dominican Republic are working to facilitate the return of nearly 1,700 foreign tourists who were evacuated after a devastating fire almost completely destroyed the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe. The blaze, which occurred on Friday, also resulted in the death of an Italian national.
The luxury resort, a popular destination on the southeastern coast frequented by U.S. and international visitors, saw its structures ravaged by the fire. Many tourists lost essential identity documents, including their passports. Hotel executives, in coordination with embassies and foreign governments, are striving to assist affected guests in their return journeys. Efforts are also underway with the police to help tourists file necessary reports online.
The deceased, an Italian tourist, is believed to have died from smoke inhalation, an incident being investigated by the Emergency Operations Center. Despite the significant destruction and loss, tourism activities in the Bayahibe area are reported to be continuing as usual.
The fire is thought to have spread with alarming speed due to strong winds and the resort's thatched roofing. At the time of the incident, the hotel was operating at 84% occupancy, highlighting the large number of individuals who had to be evacuated.
Tourists have been relocated to other hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe as the aftermath of the fire is managed.
