Apple Accuses OpenAI of Trade Secret Theft in Landmark Lawsuit
San Francisco, CA - In a dramatic turn of events, Apple has filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the artificial intelligence giant engaged in the theft of trade secrets. The iPhone maker claims that OpenAI illicitly acquired its intellectual property to develop its own consumer hardware, a move that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry.
The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California, asserts that the alleged theft occurred "at every level" of OpenAI, involving its technical staff and executives. This legal battle marks a significant rupture in the relationship between the two companies, which had previously announced a high-profile partnership in 2024, integrating ChatGPT into Apple's operating system.
Tensions reportedly escalated after OpenAI's recent move to enter the hardware market, including the acquisition of Jony Ive's startup, IO Products, for $6.4 billion. This strategic shift by OpenAI appears to have triggered Apple's legal action, which centers on former Apple employees now working for the AI firm.

According to the complaint, OpenAI's hardware chief, Tang Tan, a former Apple vice president, allegedly directed Apple employees interviewing at OpenAI to share confidential information and even bring "actual parts" from Apple for "show and tell" sessions. The lawsuit also names Chang Liu, a former Apple employee who joined OpenAI, as a defendant, accusing him of stealing an Apple laptop.
Apple further alleges that OpenAI coached departing employees on how to bypass security protocols and that the company is using a metal finishing technique invented by Apple, misleading partners about having Apple's permission. "Recently, significant evidence has emerged suggesting individuals employed by OpenAI wrongfully took Apple's secret and confidential information regarding our unreleased technologies, processes, and products," an Apple representative stated.
In response, an OpenAI representative stated, "We have no interest in other companies' trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere." IO Products is also listed as a defendant in the suit.
This legal challenge comes at a critical time for OpenAI, which is preparing for a potential initial public offering. The company recently prevailed in a high-profile trial against Elon Musk. Apple is seeking damages, injunctions, and an order to compel OpenAI to cease using its proprietary information.
