Netflix reported a third-quarter earnings beat, exceeding analyst expectations with EPS of 87 cents and meeting revenue targets at $12.87 billion. Despite strong performance, shares dipped in extended trading due to cautious fourth-quarter guidance and a revised outlook for its advertising business.
The company is facing increased competition and scrutiny over viewership growth, prompting a strategic focus on enhancing member value, improving technology, and optimizing monetization. The ad-supported tier, while growing, has seen its full-year revenue forecast reduced.
Netflix exceeded third-quarter earnings expectations, reporting 87 cents per share against an estimated 82 cents, with revenue in line at $12.87 billion. The streaming giant's revenue saw a nearly 12% year-over-year increase, attributed to membership growth and recent price hikes. Net income for the quarter rose to $3.66 billion, up from $2.55 billion in the same period last year, partly due to the timing of expenses. Despite the positive earnings, the company's shares fell approximately 6% in extended trading following the release of its fourth-quarter guidance and updated advertising revenue projections.
Looking ahead, Netflix anticipates fourth-quarter revenue to grow over 11% to $13.44 billion, driven by continued membership expansion, pricing strategies, and advertising revenue. However, the company revised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast downward to $51.1 billion, which falls on the lower end of its previous range and below Wall Street's expectations. The revised outlook has fueled investor concerns, particularly regarding the company's advertising business.
Netflix shares fall more than 6% on lower Q4 revenue outlook.
The company acknowledged investor concerns about view hours growth but emphasized that overall engagement, encompassing the quantity, quality, and variety of viewing, remains healthy. Netflix is implementing a three-pronged strategy to accelerate growth in view hours: enhancing entertainment value for members, leveraging technology to improve the service, and optimizing monetization.
The advertising business, a key growth area for Netflix, saw its full-year revenue guidance lowered to approximately $2.7 billion, down from a previous forecast of around $3 billion. This adjustment stems from a slower-than-anticipated rollout of certain ad product capabilities. Co-CEO Greg Peters noted that while the ad stack build-out has been rapid, the company is currently behind its aggressive yearly targets.
Recent organizational changes, including a workforce reduction of about 6% (roughly 1,000 employees) and a change in leadership for content, are also expected to impact fourth-quarter results, with a negative effect on operating margin of approximately 120 basis points. Former Disney executive Peter Rice has been appointed as the new Chief Content Officer.
