AI leader Anthropic plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund, potentially increasing this stake as the company’s valuation grows. This initiative aims to tackle the societal impact of artificial intelligence, particularly job disruption, through donations and programs.
The move comes as Anthropic prepares for an IPO, strategically enhancing its image while addressing concerns about AI’s effects on the workforce, though Elon Musk suggested a direct distribution of shares to the public.
AI pioneer Anthropic has announced a significant move to address the broader societal implications of artificial intelligence, committing 5% of its shares to a newly established Public Benefit Fund. This bold initiative, subject to stockholder approval, could see the fund's stake grow further as the company's valuation climbs.
Under the proposed structure, the board holds the discretion to increase the fund's allocation by an additional 2 percentage points for every 50% surge in Anthropic’s value beyond an undisclosed baseline. This mechanism ensures that as the company thrives, its commitment to public good scales proportionally.
Anthropic stated that while it has already invested $200 million into studying AI's effects, the rapid pace of AI development necessitates “bolder approaches.” The fund is designed to support a range of impactful endeavors, from substantial donations to traditional nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations, to pioneering programs aimed at mitigating AI's disruptive influence on the workforce and addressing potential job displacement.
The creation of this fund comes amid widespread concerns about AI's impact on employment. A recent Pew Research Center report highlighted that a significant 71% of adults anticipate AI will lead to a reduction in U.S. jobs over the next two years. Anthropic's proactive measure seeks to directly confront these challenges.
Structured as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC) rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the fund gains flexibility to adapt its giving strategies. Critically, Anthropic has stipulated that the equity held by the LLC will not be leveraged for lobbying or political contributions, either domestically or internationally, ensuring its focus remains on societal benefit.
This announcement arrives as Anthropic gears up for an anticipated initial public offering (IPO), reportedly slated for November, with the company having disclosed third-quarter revenues of $16.8 billion to investors. Lise Buyer, a partner at IPO advisory firm Class V Group, notes that the timing of this public fund announcement serves a dual purpose: it's a mandatory step in preparing for an IPO and a strategic move to enhance the company's public image, particularly as AI continues to reshape the global job market.
Buyer suggested that such a move could be perceived favorably if the funds are channeled into retraining initiatives or programs that assist workers in transitioning to alternative employment opportunities when their roles are disrupted by AI. She added, “Of course, it is also to burnish their reputation at a time when AI is coming under significant scrutiny.”
Anthropic has committed to releasing further details on the fund’s governance, structure, and valuation milestones in the coming months, alongside a comprehensive public benefit report detailing its progress. In response to the news, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to recommend a different approach, suggesting that Anthropic should “recommend giving the shares directly to the public.”
