President Donald Trump has defended his administration’s temporary easing of restrictions on Russian diesel fuel exports, framing the decision as a win for the “America First” policy amid bipartisan criticism. He accused the media of hypocrisy for not highlighting European Union energy purchases from Russia.
The move has drawn sharp rebukes from Republican and Democratic senators who argue it provides a financial lifeline to Russia while it continues its war in Ukraine. Analysts are divided on the potential impact on diesel prices, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated the decision “plays into Russia’s hands.”
President Donald Trump has staunchly defended his administration's decision to temporarily relax restrictions on Russian diesel fuel exports, a move that has faced criticism from both sides of the political aisle. In a statement released via his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump asserted his commitment to the "America First" policy, declaring, "I made the right choice for the American People — ALWAYS, AMERICA FIRST!"
Trump also took aim at the media, accusing them of hypocrisy for allegedly overlooking past energy purchases from Russia by the European Union. "The European Union paid Russia 250 Billion Dollars for Energy, and the Fake News Media doesn't want to get near that story," he wrote. This figure aligns with estimates of the EU's significant spending on Russian fossil fuels since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, despite the European Commission's ongoing efforts to phase out dependence on Russian energy.

The decision to allow Russian diesel to enter U.S. and global markets for a six-month period has drawn sharp rebukes from congressional lawmakers. A group of seven senators, including four Republicans, issued a joint statement on Sunday, arguing, "The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians."
Further concerns were voiced by other Republicans. Representative Michael McCaul, R-Texas, expressed apprehension that lifting sanctions on Russian oil could inadvertently fund the Kremlin's war efforts. "While I understand the desire to bring down diesel prices, I am concerned the lifting of sanctions on Russian oil will only fund the Kremlin's war machine—emboldening more violence and destruction, as we have seen in recent days," he stated on Friday.
The Trump administration contends that the deal, coordinated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, aims to alleviate soaring diesel prices, particularly relevant as the nation heads into potentially challenging midterm elections amidst economic discontent. However, some energy analysts remain skeptical, suggesting the policy may not significantly impact fuel costs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on the situation, remarking that the U.S. easing sanctions "plays into Russia's hands."
