President Trump declared that the U.S. would offer help to Russia, describing the illness as a "rough disease." Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, he stated, "We'll help. Everybody who has that kind of a problem, we'll always help." Trump acknowledged that he had not yet spoken with Russian officials about the specific case but elaborated on the severity of plague, noting that "somehow those microbes have gotten stronger and stronger, they're like an army."
The incident involves a laboratory worker at an anti-plague research institute in the Irkutsk region of eastern Siberia, whose death under undisclosed circumstances has reportedly led to the quarantine of nearly 200 individuals. Public health concerns have been amplified by the situation.
A State Department spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed CNBC, "We are monitoring the situation closely with the CDC and our other interagency partners. Many details have not been confirmed. We encourage Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly." The spokesperson reiterated Trump's sentiment that the U.S. would provide assistance if possible, despite ongoing tensions with Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed in an email that the cause of death has not yet been verified and that testing is in progress. The WHO stated it is in communication with Russian authorities and has offered support. Based on the information currently available, the organization has assessed the risk to the wider public as low.
It remains uncertain whether Russian authorities have requested, or would be inclined to accept, any U.S. assistance in managing the situation.
