Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will meet President Donald Trump for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday, marking their first one-on-one encounter. This meeting occurs as Anthropic gears up for a major IPO and navigates a complex relationship with the Trump administration, which has seen both strained interactions and recent efforts at reconciliation.
The dinner follows Amodei’s absence from a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping and his prior public calls for AI development to be slowed due to safety concerns, a stance that drew criticism from Trump. Meanwhile, Anthropic continues to face challenges with the Department of Defense, which has designated the company a ‘supply chain risk’.
Anthropic CEO Amodei to Dine with Trump Amid Tensions and IPO Buzz
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is set to have a private dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House on Sunday, a meeting that marks the first one-on-one between the two leaders. This comes after Amodei missed a high-profile state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping due to a scheduling conflict, while other tech titans like OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceX's Elon Musk were present.

The dinner arrives at a critical juncture for Anthropic, as the company prepares for a highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). The relationship between Anthropic and the Trump administration has been notably strained over the past year, making this private meeting a potentially crucial opportunity for Amodei to de-escalate tensions.
A White House official stated, "President Trump has been clear: America will lead the world in Super Intelligence, while protecting American consumers. We will drive innovation, strengthen American competitiveness, and ensure this transformative technology works for the American people."
The meeting's context is further complicated by Amodei's recent public call for the AI industry to slow down the pace of advanced model development due to potential risks. This stance, outlined in a three-step proposal and advocating for government oversight, reportedly angered President Trump, who has previously criticized Amodei and Anthropic. Trump took to Truth Social to assert his administration's control over AI, stating, "The Trump Administration has stopped AI 'people' from doing bad, or potentially bad, 'things,' like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a 'perfect little angel' - and we will continue to do so!"
Adding another layer of complexity, Amodei had previously supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election and was a vocal critic of Trump.
Prior to Amodei's call for a development slowdown, Anthropic's relationship with the Trump administration seemed to be improving. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had indicated that Anthropic was "back on the right side" after export controls on some of its models were imposed and later eased. Lutnick also hosted a fireside chat with Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, who has been increasingly involved in engaging with the administration.

However, Anthropic faced significant setbacks with the Department of Defense (DOD). Negotiations collapsed in February over disagreements regarding the military's use of Anthropic's models, particularly concerning autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. The DOD subsequently labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk," prohibiting its use by the military and defense contractors. Anthropic's lawsuit to reverse this designation was unsuccessful when a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon's decision.
Emil Michael, the DOD's technology chief, celebrated the ruling, stating, "The hammer of justice has smashed @AnthropicAI arguments. They are a Supply Chain Risk to the defense industrial base serving the @DeptofWar. Warfighters will sleep better knowing that no private company will insert their opinions in the chain of command. @SecWar was right!"
Defense Secretary Hegseth accused Anthropic of "duplicity" and attempting to "strong-arm the United States military into submission." He reaffirmed this position, stating, "Confirmed: @AnthropicAI = Supply Chain Risk. The @DeptofWar does what is right for the Country and our Warriors."
