Bangkok Declared Disaster Zone as Torrential Rains Unleash Severe Flooding
Bangkok, Thailand - The bustling capital of Thailand, Bangkok, has been officially declared a disaster-affected zone following unprecedented rainfall that has inundated the city and disrupted daily life. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt issued the declaration on Saturday, citing the significant risks to public safety and property posed by the widespread flooding.
People navigate flooded streets, with vehicles partially submerged, as Bangkok grapples with severe inundation.
Nearly 300 mm (12 inches) of rain cascaded down in just 48 hours, turning major thoroughfares into rivers and forcing residents to wade through waist-deep waters. The situation is particularly dire in areas adjacent to canals, where water levels have risen dramatically.
In response to the crisis, the army is actively involved in disaster relief operations, establishing temporary shelters and field kitchens. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has also repurposed schools to serve as temporary accommodation for displaced residents and has urged the public to avoid non-essential travel.
Supermarkets have seen a surge in shoppers stocking up on essential supplies, reflecting a growing concern among the populace. "I'm worried too, because I haven't stocked up on food beforehand, and I've never faced this kind of situation alone before, since my parents aren't with me," shared 19-year-old Sansuk Laowatcharakul.
Businesses in low-lying areas are also severely impacted, with many shops experiencing significant water damage.
An emergency advisory was issued for residents living near canals, urging them to move their belongings to higher ground. "Before the warning, I wasn't aware enough to consider relocating," admitted Bangkok resident Suppakarn Julavijitphong, who was seen carrying luggage from his condo surrounded by floodwaters.
Despite the challenging conditions, Suvarnabhumi, the city's main airport, remains operational. However, the Tourism Authority has advised travelers to allocate an additional two to three hours for their journeys to the airport, anticipating potential delays.
This severe flooding event brings back memories of the devastating floods in November, which were among Thailand's worst in decades, resulting in at least 145 fatalities and widespread damage to homes in the southern provinces.
