Treasury yields remained largely stable on Tuesday as investors assessed escalating Middle East tensions and awaited crucial inflation data. Oil prices saw a modest increase following developments related to the Strait of Hormuz.
Markets are keenly focused on the upcoming July CPI report, which is expected to influence the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook. Any deviation from forecasts could lead to significant shifts in the Treasury market.
Treasury Yields Hold Steady Amidst Middle East Tensions and Anticipation of Inflation Data
New York, NY - Treasury yields showed little movement on Tuesday as investors navigated geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and awaited key inflation data later in the week. The market is closely watching developments that could impact both economic outlooks and the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions.

Key Yield Movements
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield, a significant indicator for consumer borrowing costs, dipped by 1 basis point to 4.688%. Shorter and longer-term yields also saw minor fluctuations. The 2-year Treasury yield, which closely reflects Federal Reserve policy, decreased by less than 1 basis point to 4.23%. The 30-year Treasury yield, typically more sensitive to global events, declined by less than 1 basis point to 5.236%.
Note: One basis point equals 0.01%. Treasury yields and prices move in opposite directions.
Geopolitical Influence and Oil Prices
Recent hopes for a resolution in the Middle East appeared to diminish following statements from Iranian officials and reactions from U.S. political figures. President Donald Trump's remarks regarding reparations and Iran's stance on the Strait of Hormuz have added to market uncertainty.
In response, oil prices experienced an uptick. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures rose 1% to approximately $83 per barrel, while Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, also increased by 1% to around $88 per barrel. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains a key concern for global energy markets.
Looking Ahead: Inflation Data on Deck
Government bond yields had closed higher on Monday, with both 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields gaining 4 basis points. As markets continue to assess the implications of Middle East developments on inflation and the Federal Reserve's potential interest rate trajectory, attention is now turning to upcoming domestic economic data.
The core focus this week will be the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, due on Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones anticipate a 0.1% month-over-month increase in the overall CPI, with an annual rate of 3.4%. Core CPI, excluding volatile food and energy prices, is expected to rise by 0.2% monthly and 2.5% annually. These figures are critical in shaping market expectations. "CPI does set the stage," noted Keith Buchanan, senior portfolio manager at Globalt Investments. "Either it's as expected and contained or not and we'll start to see the long end [of the Treasury curve] shift higher."
