Jeff Bezos has initiated plans to sell approximately 15 million Amazon shares, a transaction estimated to be worth around $4.1 billion. This significant divestment comes on the heels of Amazon's stock reaching a record high, driven by better-than-expected quarterly earnings and increasing investor confidence in the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. The stock's surge pushed Amazon's market capitalization above the $3 trillion mark.
The filing, which revealed the planned sale under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established on November 14, 2025, caused Amazon's stock to dip by more than 2% on Tuesday. According to the filing, the sales were executed on Monday through Morgan Stanley.
Amazon's year-to-date stock performance.
Amazon's shares have seen a substantial rally of about 20% year-to-date, significantly outperforming the S&P 500's 12% gain. This performance is largely attributed to robust second-quarter earnings, particularly the strong growth in its cloud computing division, which is seen as a key indicator of the successful translation of AI investments into accelerating demand.
The Form 144 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission detailed Bezos' intention to sell 15 million common shares, acquired as founder stock in 1994, with a market value of approximately $4.07 billion based on Monday's closing price. Bezos has a history of selling Amazon stock, often utilizing prearranged trading plans, while maintaining his position as one of the company's largest shareholders. The filing also mentioned that Bezos donated 220,200 shares to nonprofit organizations in May, which may have been sold in the preceding three months.
