Ukrainian drone attacks have intensified deep within Russia, claiming at least two lives and striking vital infrastructure, including a major logistics hub belonging to Wildberries, Russia's dominant online retail giant. Overnight, regions along Russia's Volga River bore the brunt of these assaults, prompting Moscow to claim it downed a staggering 635 Ukrainian drones.
The strategic strikes signify Ukraine's expanding campaign to undermine Russia's economic and military capacity amidst the ongoing four-year conflict. Targeting facilities far from the front lines, Kyiv aims to disrupt the Kremlin's ability to sustain its war efforts.
One of the most significant targets was a Wildberries warehouse in the Samara region, approximately 800 km (500 miles) from Ukraine's most advanced military positions. Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed the attack, noting a fire erupted which firefighters are now working to extinguish, though fortunately, no casualties were reported at this site.
Meanwhile, the neighboring Saratov region experienced a more tragic outcome. Governor Roman Busargin confirmed that a strike on a residential building in the city of Engels resulted in two fatalities. Furthermore, civil infrastructure in both Engels and Saratov city sustained damage. These cities are no strangers to Ukrainian aggression; Saratov hosts a critical oil refinery, while Engels is home to a military airbase, making them repeated targets.
Elsewhere, in Russia's Bashkortostan region, Governor Radiy Khabirov reported a massive drone assault on industrial facilities. Air defense units successfully repelled the attack, though one drone was shot down over the industrial area of the regional capital of Ufa, where a resulting fire is being brought under control.
The attack on Wildberries is not isolated; Ukrainian forces have reportedly targeted about a dozen of the company's sites since July 18. Wildberries, often dubbed Russia's equivalent to Amazon, is a linchpin of the consumer economy, and disrupting its operations is seen as a strategic move to impact Russia's domestic stability and supply chains.
