During the flight, the Super Heavy booster successfully separated from the Starship spacecraft approximately two minutes after liftoff, subsequently making a controlled descent into the Gulf. SpaceX later disclosed in a post-flight statement that the booster's landing was not entirely flawless; while it "attempted to relight its engines for the landing burn," only a fraction ignited, resulting in a "hard splashdown."
Crucially, the Starship upper stage completed its trajectory with a "soft splashdown" in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX confirmed the spacecraft remained "intact," offering engineers an unprecedented opportunity to examine a fully preserved heatshield following re-entry.

A significant highlight of Friday's mission was the successful deployment of 20 novel Starlink V3 satellites into orbit, approximately 18 minutes into the test flight. This marked the inaugural opportunity for SpaceX to assess the in-flight performance of these advanced units, which were designed to deorbit and burn up within about 20 minutes.
Manufactured at SpaceX's Redmond, Washington, facility, these new V3 satellites represent a leap forward, being considerably larger and more robust than previous Starlink iterations. A SpaceX business analyst explained during the livestream that they are outfitted with solar arrays that generate double the power of earlier generations, enhancing the network's capabilities.
Looking ahead, SpaceX is also actively developing "Starmind" satellites, with aspirations to launch them as future orbital data centers, further expanding its ambitious satellite infrastructure.
Beyond deploying its enhanced Starlink satellites, SpaceX envisions Starship as the cornerstone for humanity's return to the lunar surface with U.S. astronauts, and ultimately, for crewed missions to Mars. Preparations are already underway for a significant NASA test flight utilizing Starship next year.
This recent flight was notably the second for the Starship V3, the newest and most refined iteration of the gargantuan rocket system.
However, the mission was not without its critics. Tim Farrar, a satellite services industry expert from TMF Associates, acknowledged SpaceX's progress but cautioned that the company "remains a long way from achieving rapid reusability of the entire ship." Farrar highlighted the observed issues with relighting Starship's Raptor engines during Friday's descent, warning that "Any similar failure during an attempted landing at the company's launch site could cause severe damage to the launchpad."
The path to Friday's launch was not smooth. SpaceX, via a post on its X platform (also owned by Elon Musk), confirmed that an earlier test flight scheduled for Thursday was postponed "due to weather." Furthermore, a July 16th attempt was aborted when the rocket's booster initiated a hold, abruptly shutting down engines just as they began to ignite, as explained by a SpaceX employee during that livestream event.
Financially, SpaceX has faced headwinds since its IPO. Its stock has declined in four out of the last five weeks, registering a substantial 43% slump from its peak closing price on June 16. Investors are closely monitoring these test flights, as the success of Starship is intrinsically linked to the company's ambitious expansion plans for its Starlink satellite internet service.
