While top-tier companies like Microsoft and Google retain strong balance sheets, the pressure is mounting on lower-rated entities. This structural change in the tech industry’s financial landscape necessitates a closer investor focus on the return on investment for these colossal AI expenditures.

New York, NY - The aggressive push to build artificial intelligence infrastructure, projected to cost trillions annually, is significantly eroding free cash flow and amplifying balance-sheet risks for major tech companies, commonly known as hyperscalers, according to a stark warning from Moody's Ratings.
In a research note released this week, Moody's highlighted that even the most financially robust corporations, including Alphabet and Microsoft, are increasingly relying on debt, stock sales, and off-balance-sheet maneuvers to finance their ambitious AI endeavors. This marks a significant departure from their previous 'asset-light' business models, which were characterized by modest capital expenditures focused on software and intellectual property.
"The transition from asset-light to asset-heavy models requires unprecedented levels of investment and capital raising," Moody's stated in the note. This strategic shift is putting pressure on the credit quality of six key companies tracked by the ratings agency: Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and CoreWeave.
Massive Capital Expenditures and Shifting Financial Models
Moody's projects that capital expenditures, essential for acquiring physical assets like data centers, will reach an astounding $785 billion in 2026 and are on track to hit approximately $1 trillion next year. This represents a dramatic acceleration compared to the decades-long Silicon Valley playbook, which favored low-cost software replication yielding high profit margins and strong balance sheets.
Generative AI, conversely, necessitates a vast physical infrastructure, including data centers filled with power-hungry servers and advanced chips. To fund this expansion, tech giants are increasingly turning to Wall Street, a trend that is boosting profits within the financial sector. Moody's reports that direct debt among these six hyperscalers has surged to roughly $460 billion. Furthermore, companies like Alphabet have tapped public markets, with Google's parent company announcing an $85 billion equity sale to bolster its AI infrastructure funding.
Leasing Data Centers and Debt-Equivalents
The report also points out that the substantial upfront investment required for AI hardware and infrastructure, coupled with a longer revenue realization period, is placing pressure on free cash flow across the sector. To manage direct debt on their balance sheets, hyperscalers are increasingly utilizing off-balance-sheet financing, primarily through long-term data center leases.
Moody's estimates that lease commitments across the group have ballooned to $1.2 trillion, with over $820 billion from leases yet to commence, indicating ongoing construction of data centers. While these lease obligations do not appear as traditional debt, Moody's considers them as debt-equivalent liabilities that will necessitate significant future rental payments.
Varying Credit Risks
Despite these concerns, Moody's acknowledges that Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta still possess some of the strongest corporate balance sheets globally, making an imminent threat to their investment-grade ratings unlikely. The immediate pressure appears concentrated on lower-rated entities such as Oracle, which holds a Baa2 rating with a negative outlook, just two notches above junk status, and CoreWeave, a specialized AI cloud provider operating in the high-yield market with a Ba3 rating and reliant on complex private debt structures.
A Circular AI Ecosystem
Moody's also identified a degree of 'circularity' within the AI boom. Significant backlogs reported by hyperscalers are partly due to strategic agreements with pre-IPO AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. These labs receive billions in investment and, in turn, spend heavily on cloud computing services from the same companies, creating a self-reinforcing AI ecosystem. This interdependence raises risks, as major industry players increasingly rely on the same AI customers and share similar assumptions about future market demand.
However, the tech giants' considerable strengths, including robust demand for AI computing, continued growth in cloud businesses, and hundreds of billions in long-term customer contracts, provide a significant buffer. These factors support the industry's generally strong credit profiles despite the intense spending environment. Moody's emphasizes that investors should anticipate a structural transformation in the tech industry's financial profile, with an increasing focus on the companies' ability to achieve adequate returns on their substantial investments.
