Wall Street Eyes Pet Obesity: GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Headed for Overweight Cats, Reshaping a $200B Industry

This aspiration is fast transitioning from wishful thinking to concrete veterinary research. Two U.S. biotech companies are actively engaged in testing experimental GLP-1 weight-loss treatments for overweight cats, marking a pioneering effort to introduce this blockbuster drug class into animal medicine. Concurrently, some of the world's leading pet-food manufacturers are heavily investing in nutrition and longevity products, addressing many of the same pet health concerns.

The "Ozempic for Cats" Phenomenon

The GLP-1 boom, famously driven by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, has already revolutionized human understanding and treatment of obesity and diabetes. This powerful class of drugs is now poised to enter a new frontier: household pets.

Among the innovators, Akston Biosciences is sponsoring a clinical study at Cornell University to evaluate a once-weekly GLP-1 therapy for overweight and obese felines. Simultaneously, San Francisco-based OKAVA Pharmaceuticals has initiated trials for a long-acting implant designed to deliver continuous medication for up to six months. While neither product is yet approved and no commercial "Ozempic for cats" currently exists, these early-stage clinical trials are crucial steps towards demonstrating safety and efficacy.

These developments signify a broader evolution in pet care. As owners increasingly invest in premium food, supplements, diagnostics, and advanced veterinary treatments, new opportunities are emerging for biotech firms alongside established pet-food companies. Statistics highlight the urgency: the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention reported in 2022 that 61% of cats and 59% of dogs evaluated by U.S. veterinary professionals were classified as overweight or obese. Cats, in particular, pose a difficult challenge due to their resistance to increased exercise, dietary changes, and consistent oral medication, making GLP-1 therapies a potentially attractive solution if proven successful.

"Feline obesity is one of the most common yet least effectively treated health issues in veterinary medicine," stated Akston CEO Todd Zion in November, announcing the company's GLP-1 pet clinical trial. The Akston-backed Cornell University trial will assess approximately 70 overweight or obese cats over three months. OKAVA's "MEOW-1" study is testing a veterinarian-inserted implant for long-term medication release.

An Okava spokesperson acknowledged pet obesity as a significant unmet medical need in companion animal health but deemed it premature to discuss future sales expectations. Both companies anticipate top-line results from their clinical trials later this year, hoping to demonstrate that human GLP-1 drug models can effectively regulate appetite in pets.

From Premiumization to Medicalization in Pet Care

While the future ubiquity of GLP-1 drugs in veterinary medicine remains uncertain, industry analysts agree they align with a broader shift transforming the estimated $200 billion U.S. pet economy.

"I would describe this as an expansion from premiumization into medicalization, rather than owners abandoning premium food," explained Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman. He points to consumers' growing preference for pet food marketed with healthier, fresh ingredients and therapeutic nutrition. Simultaneously, veterinary care, diagnostics, and pharmacy services are consuming an increasing share of household pet spending.

Morgan Stanley forecasts U.S. pet food sales to reach approximately $65 billion by 2026, with overall U.S. pet spending projected to surge from around $196 billion in 2025 to over $240 billion by 2030.

Rather than replacing specialized diets, obesity drugs are expected to become another valuable tool within a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem, encompassing veterinary services, diagnostics, and therapeutic nutrition. However, Gutman cautions investors against assuming pet GLP-1s will mirror the explosive commercial success of human obesity drugs in terms of penetration and pricing. He notes that veterinary medicine largely remains an out-of-pocket expense for owners, implying that affordability will likely constrain widespread adoption.

Instead, Gutman suggests a more credible near-term scenario involves growth stemming from the broader obesity ecosystem, including structured weight-management programs, prescription diets, and the treatment of obesity-related conditions. A standalone, high-penetration GLP-1 market for pets is likely to take longer to fully emerge.

Food Giants Adapt and Innovate

The pet industry's largest players are not passively awaiting the arrival of new obesity drugs. Nestlé's latest pet product strategy, dubbed "Personalized Health," emphasizes new offerings focused on digestive health, healthy aging, and longevity. This approach demonstrates how major pet-food companies are increasingly integrating nutrition into preventive health care, moving beyond simply feeding pets.

Nestlé highlights several long-term trends supporting this strategy, including cat ownership growing roughly three times faster than dog ownership recently, and premium cat food outpacing premium dog food growth. Gutman views cats as an attractive "whitespace opportunity" for growth, appealing to younger consumers seeking lower-cost, lower-maintenance pets. Nestlé also claims that its newer nutritional products can extend the healthy lifespan of cats by more than a year.

The global pet supplements and nutrition market, already valued at billions, continues its rapid expansion as owners proactively seek to improve their animals' health. Gutman identifies longevity as the industry's next major theme.

"We think the industry is increasingly focused on extending healthy lifespan through earlier diagnostics, higher-value therapeutics and therapeutic nutrition," he affirmed. "Longevity is likely to become an overarching theme that ties these categories together."

This convergence is drawing together diverse businesses that once operated in separate market segments—from consumer staples companies like Nestlé Purina and Colgate-Palmolive subsidiary Hill's expanding health-focused nutrition, to biotech firms developing medicines, and veterinary providers offering increasingly sophisticated care. Animal-health companies such as Zoetis, Elanco, and IDEXX are well-positioned to benefit through therapeutics and diagnostics. Even online retailer Chewy has broadened its scope into pharmacy subscriptions and veterinary clinics.

Owner Adoption: The Critical Price Point

Ultimately, the adoption of pet obesity drugs may depend less on their scientific efficacy and more on their cost. For Felix's owner, Amy, affordability would be the decisive factor, requiring the drugs to be significantly cheaper than human GLP-1 medications. "It would have to be affordable," she emphasized.

This question of affordability will likely determine whether GLP-1s become a mainstream veterinary treatment or remain a niche option for a select group of owners. For now, the technology remains firmly in the experimental stage. However, the emergence of multiple feline clinical trials signals that one of the pharmaceutical industry's most influential drug classes is indeed beginning its journey into veterinary medicine. This trend unfolds even as established pet-food companies race to convince owners that healthier diets, supplements, and longevity-focused nutrition can deliver many of the same benefits, potentially before prescription drugs ever reach the broader market.
