India’s largest stock exchange, the National Stock Exchange (NSE), has filed for an initial public offering (IPO), which is projected to be one of the country’s most significant listings this year. The IPO, an ‘offer for sale’ by major domestic and foreign investors including State Bank of India and Temasek, signals a revitalization of India’s IPO market.
This move, alongside the anticipated public issue from Reliance Jio Infocomm, underscores a resurgence in listing activities following a period of subdued investor appetite, potentially raising over $6.3 billion combined.
India's premier stock exchange, the National Stock Exchange (NSE), has officially submitted its initial public offering (IPO) documents, signaling what is expected to be one of the largest market debuts in the country this year.
This much-anticipated IPO will solely comprise an 'offer for sale,' allowing a consortium of prominent domestic and international investors to divest portions of their holdings. Among the notable entities reducing their stakes are India's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India, alongside global investment giants Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Singapore's Temasek.
While specific pricing details and the overall valuation of the IPO have yet to be disclosed in the draft papers, market analysts anticipate a two-to-three-month timeline for securing regulatory approval from India's capital market watchdog.

The NSE stands as a colossal player in the global equity landscape, dominating India's cash market with a formidable 93% share. Furthermore, it commands nearly 100% of the nation's equity futures trading and approximately 75% of equity options trading, as per its IPO filing. India's equity market boasts a total capitalization of around 474 trillion rupees ($5 trillion), positioning it among the top ten globally, with NSE serving as its principal exchange.
The exchange has a history of attempting to list, with efforts dating back to 2016, and currently serves over 129 million unique registered investors.
In comparison, its smaller Indian counterpart, BSE, holds a market capitalization of $17.2 billion and trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 66 times on a trailing 12-month basis.
The broader Indian IPO market experienced a period of muted activity due to weakened investor sentiment, partly influenced by geopolitical tensions such as the Middle East conflict. However, with indications of an easing in the regional strife, a renewed vigor is being observed in the IPO landscape, paving the way for delayed major public issues to proceed.
Adding to the momentum, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio Infocomm, the nation's largest wireless operator, is also reportedly preparing to file papers for a significant $4 billion public issue on or before June 19, according to a Financial Times report.
Collectively, the anticipated IPOs of NSE and Reliance Jio could amass over 600 billion rupees (exceeding $6.3 billion) in funding. This sum alone could account for nearly one-third of the total capital raised through the 104 mainboard IPOs recorded last year, highlighted Prashant Rao, director and head of equity capital markets at Anand Rathi Investment Banking.
