The S&P 500 index closed above 7,800 for the first time, reaching a new record high fueled by gains in technology stocks, particularly chipmakers like Marvell Technology and Advanced Micro Devices. Declining Treasury yields also contributed to the positive market sentiment, as investors looked past inflation concerns.

The Nasdaq Composite also set a new record, driven by AI-related optimism. Meanwhile, oil prices remained stable, and market watchers are awaiting the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes for further economic insights.
S&P 500 Hits Record High Above 7,800, Fueled by Tech Surge and Easing Yields
October 6, 2026
The S&P 500 surged to a fresh all-time intraday high on Tuesday, propelled by robust gains in major technology stocks and a decline in Treasury yields. The broad market index concluded the day with a record close of 7,818.93, marking a 0.58% increase.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average also saw significant gains, adding 253.38 points, or 0.49%, to finish at 51,521.28. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.45%, closing at a record 27,599.79, and hit a new all-time high during the trading session.
The upward momentum was significantly boosted by a strong performance in chipmakers. Marvell Technology jumped 5.8%, while Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) gained nearly 3% as investors expressed increased optimism about the companies' future outlooks. Other technology giants like Broadcom also advanced, adding 3.7%.
"Everyone's focused on the markets being up, and AI is the place to be," commented Stephen Kolano, chief investment officer at Integrated Financial Partners. He noted that investors are currently "looking through the inflation concerns, especially as it relates to oil, diesel, etc. It's like, 'Okay, that's something that potentially gets resolved in the future.'"
Oil prices remained relatively stable by the end of the day. Brent crude settled 0.26% higher at $100.58 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures saw a modest rise of 0.01% to $89.44 a barrel.
Kolano also suggested that interest rates are "fundamentally kind of where they need to be." The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note decreased by 3 basis points to 5.281%, while the 30-year bond yield remained largely unchanged at 5.655%. Both yields had reached levels not seen since 2002 on Monday.
"People are looking for where might there be some source of contagion that starts to spread, but right now, it's all staying well contained and just being dominated by the momentum, the earnings growth, the investment coming from artificial intelligence," Kolano added.
Traders are now anticipating the release of the Federal Reserve's minutes from its September meeting on Wednesday, which could provide further insights into the policymakers' decisions regarding interest rate hikes.
