Trump's arrival in Beijing Wednesday evening local time was met with significant diplomatic pomp, including a welcoming party led by China's Vice President Han Zheng, a military band, and hundreds of enthusiastic young people waving flags. Earlier, in a crucial preparatory meeting held in Seoul, South Korea, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng engaged in hours-long talks focused on pressing economic and trade issues, which Beijing later characterized as "candid, in-depth and constructive."
Despite the grand display, expectations for concrete breakthroughs from the summit remain tempered. Deep-seated structural competition and mutual distrust continue to characterize the relationship between the two global superpowers, suggesting that any significant deliverables may be hard to achieve.
