President Donald Trump has commenced a highly anticipated summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, with key discussions expected on critical global issues including Iran, Taiwan, and artificial intelligence. Trump’s arrival on Wednesday was marked by a grand welcome, though expectations for concrete breakthroughs remain low amidst deep-seated bilateral competition. The U.S. delegation includes prominent business figures like Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, highlighting the economic focus of the talks.
President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping commenced a highly anticipated, high-stakes summit in Beijing Thursday, marking a critical moment for global relations. The discussions are set to cover a broad spectrum of sensitive topics including Iran, Taiwan, and the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
Trump's arrival in Beijing Wednesday evening local time was met with significant diplomatic pomp, including a welcoming party led by China's Vice President Han Zheng, a military band, and hundreds of enthusiastic young people waving flags. Earlier, in a crucial preparatory meeting held in Seoul, South Korea, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng engaged in hours-long talks focused on pressing economic and trade issues, which Beijing later characterized as "candid, in-depth and constructive."
Despite the grand display, expectations for concrete breakthroughs from the summit remain tempered. Deep-seated structural competition and mutual distrust continue to characterize the relationship between the two global superpowers, suggesting that any significant deliverables may be hard to achieve.
The U.S. delegation accompanying President Trump boasts an impressive roster of high-profile business leaders, including tech titans Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, and Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. Their presence underscores the economic and technological dimensions of the bilateral relationship.
The summit agenda includes a bilateral tea and a working lunch on Friday before the U.S. President concludes his visit and returns to Washington.
