Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s “Mad Money,” is advising investors to shift focus from the struggling technology sector to consumer staples for diversification. He highlighted four specific companies—Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble, Constellation Brands, and Coca-Cola—as attractive defensive investments.
This recommendation comes as tech stocks lagged in October, while consumer staples surged over 11%, demonstrating resilience in a volatile market.
Wall Street oracle Jim Cramer is signaling a significant pivot for investors, urging them to look beyond the beleaguered technology sector, particularly the struggling artificial intelligence trade, and instead focus on the resilient consumer staples. According to the "Mad Money" host, it's time to embrace what the market is offering, and currently, that means camping out in defensive, household brand names.
The shift comes as the Nasdaq-100, heavily weighted with tech giants, concluded October down nearly 7%. In stark contrast, investors rotated into more stable market segments, with the S&P 500 Equal Weight index gaining approximately 5% for the month. The consumer staples index proved to be a standout performer, surging an impressive 11.4% and securing its position as the second-best performing sector behind energy.
Cramer emphasized, "You've got to take what the market is giving you, and until we sort out some of the issues for the tech sector, some other groups might be better bets for the time being." He specifically highlighted four consumer staples companies he finds particularly compelling, characterizing them as businesses that consistently sell essential goods regardless of broader economic volatility:
Watch now: Until tech recovers, I like consumer staples, says Jim Cramer (2:49)
- Kimberly-Clark (KMB): The powerhouse behind Kleenex and Huggies, Kimberly-Clark is a new addition to Cramer's Charitable Trust. He foresees substantial upside, especially from its anticipated merger with Kenvue (KVUE), owner of brands like Tylenol and Band-Aid. This deal is expected to unlock significant efficiencies, creating a formidable consumer products leader. Despite an almost 11% gain in October, Kimberly-Clark trades at less than 15 times earnings and boasts an attractive 4.7% dividend yield. Cramer believes, "I think the move is just getting started."
- Procter & Gamble (PG): While Cramer's Investing Club recently exited its long-held position, he still views P&G as a strong defensive play. The company delivered better-than-expected quarterly results, and Cramer expressed confidence in new CEO Shailesh Jejurikar. P&G shares rallied 11% in October, though Cramer slightly favors Kimberly-Clark for its lower valuation and higher dividend yield.
- Constellation Brands (STZ): Makers of popular beers like Modelo and Pacifico, Constellation Brands appears to be staging a turnaround. Its core beer business is expanding market share, and the wine and spirits division reported a robust 15% shipment growth last quarter. The stock jumped 20% in October, yet Cramer sees continued value, with shares trading at roughly 11 times earnings and yielding over 3%. He confidently stated, "It increasingly looks like the worst is behind Constellation Brands."
- Coca-Cola (KO): Among beverage giants, Coca-Cola stands out as Cramer's top choice. The company recently reported strong quarterly results, driven by increased volume rather than just price hikes. Cramer lauded its innovation in zero-calorie beverages and the success of its Fairlife milk business. Coca-Cola shares climbed 9% in October.
