Major U.S. stock indices posted weekly gains as bond yields stabilized and oil prices rose. This rally, however, has led several stocks, particularly in the energy sector like Valero Energy, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum, along with industrial software maker PTC, to become overbought based on their Relative Strength Index (RSI) exceeding 70. Geopolitical events affecting oil supply contributed to the energy sector’s swift ascent.
Wall Street concluded the week on a high note, with major indices seeing gains as bond yields found stability after hovering near 24-year highs, and crude oil prices experienced a modest uptick. However, this swift ascent has pushed several stocks into "overbought" territory, signaling they may have climbed too rapidly.
The S&P 500 recorded a weekly advance of 1.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.9%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 0.6%. This broad market rally propelled certain S&P 500 constituents, particularly within the energy sector, beyond the 70-point threshold on the Relative Strength Index (RSI). The RSI, a crucial momentum indicator, gauges the speed and magnitude of price changes, with a reading above 70 typically indicating an overbought condition.
Driving the rise in oil prices were significant geopolitical events: Hurricane Isaias disrupted U.S. oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, while Iran intensified tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 0.81% and international Brent crude futures jumped 2.42% over the week, with energy stocks moving in tandem.
Among the energy sector's standout performers were petroleum refiners Valero Energy and Phillips 66, which saw their shares surge 6.8% and 8.8% respectively. Their RSI readings reflected this rapid growth, with Valero hitting 79 and Phillips 66 reaching 76. Marathon Petroleum experienced an even more dramatic rise, gaining 35% on the week, pushing its RSI to an elevated 82. Piper Sandler acknowledged the strong performance, raising its third-quarter earnings estimate for these refiners and maintaining an "overweight" rating.
Beyond energy, industrial software giant PTC also saw a remarkable 35% increase in its share price this week, leading to an RSI of 79. This surge followed the announcement that Schneider Electric agreed to acquire PTC in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $22.6 billion, at $205 per share. Other notable stocks identified as overbought include seed and genetics firm Vylor and data storage specialist Everpure.
