Experts like Misra and BondBloxx co-founder Joanna Gallegos emphasize that current fixed-income yields are historically appealing and can provide crucial income and volatility reduction for portfolios amid a growing economy.

Priya Misra, a portfolio manager at J.P. Morgan, highlighted that investors can now achieve yields of around 6.5% even in the highest quality corporate debt, eliminating the need to "go down in credit quality." This makes fixed income an appealing alternative for those wary of an overconcentration in artificial intelligence-related stocks.
"What fixed income gives you is this diversified set of returns. It's not just an AI trade or a tech trade. You have the Treasury trade. You have credit outside of AI," Misra explained on CNBC's "ETF Edge."
Misra co-manages the JPMorgan Core Plus Bond Fund ETF (JCPB), which holds nearly $16 billion in assets. As of August 31, over three-quarters of its portfolio consists of BBB-rated debt and above. The fund has recently increased its exposure to double-B and single-B rated debt due to widening high-yield spreads and has also begun increasing duration, anticipating a potential end to the current rate hike cycle.
Despite the JPMorgan Core Plus Bond Fund ETF being down over 5% year-to-date, Misra stressed the importance of a granular approach, examining individual bonds and sectors alongside bottom-up analysis to ensure companies are not over-leveraged. She also expressed concern about the impact of higher rates on the housing market.
Echoing this optimistic outlook, Joanna Gallegos, co-founder of BondBloxx, also advised investors to capitalize on "historically attractive" yields in the debt markets. "You want to really consider getting some corporate debt into your portfolio," Gallegos stated, adding that fixed income can provide income and help offset portfolio volatility. She pointed to strong corporate fundamentals and continued economic growth as key drivers, suggesting these factors are being overlooked in the broader discussion about Treasury rates.
BondBloxx, known for its fixed-income ETFs across various sectors, offers products such as the BondBloxx Private Credit CLO ETF (PCMM). This fund is down 0.6% year-to-date as of Friday's close.
