Google Bets Big on Geothermal for Data Centers
Fervo Energy has entered into a substantial 396-megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement with Google. This strategic partnership aims to advance the development of Fervo's flagship Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems GeoCluster, located in the heart of southwest Utah.
This ambitious multi-phase project is slated to commence operations in 2028. Once online, the carbon-free energy generated by Fervo will play a crucial role in powering a Google data center in the region, aligning with the company's sustainability goals.
Tim Latimer, CEO of Fervo, highlighted the critical need for such solutions: "As demand for reliable electricity grows, customers like Google need energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock, and deliver where power is needed."
Expanding Partnership and Future Potential
The deal also grants Google an exciting option to procure an additional 600 MW of power from Fervo by June 2030, potentially bringing the total capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt (GW).
It's important to note that these plans are contingent upon successful engineering feasibility studies and obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals. Fervo has assured that this new electricity capacity will come at "no cost to existing ratepayers," demonstrating a commitment to responsible development.
This isn't the first collaboration between the two innovative companies; their partnership began in 2023, with Fervo already supplying power to Google's data centers in Nevada. The escalating scale of this new agreement suggests a highly successful and expanding alliance in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
