Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis has unveiled its largest vehicle yet, the all-electric GV90 SUV, poised to compete in the full-size luxury EV segment. This flagship model introduces a new design direction, offers an impressive 310-mile range with 660 horsepower, and features unique coach doors on its Neolun variant. Set to launch in the U.S. early next year, the GV90 signifies Genesis’s ambitious growth and commitment to electrified luxury mobility.
SAN FRANCISCO — Hyundai Motor's premium Genesis brand has officially unveiled its new flagship vehicle, an all-electric large SUV dubbed the Genesis GV90. This groundbreaking model, designed to accommodate up to seven passengers, introduces a fresh design direction for Genesis and expands the luxury division's U.S. lineup to seven distinct vehicles, marking a significant step in Hyundai's domestic sales expansion.
The GV90 stands as the largest vehicle ever offered by Genesis since its entry into the U.S. market a decade ago. It is poised to challenge formidable competitors in the burgeoning large SUV segment, including the Cadillac Vistiq and Escalade IQ, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and the Rivian R1S.
José Muñoz, CEO of Hyundai, underscored the significance of this launch in a recent statement: "Today marks a landmark arrival for Genesis and for the future of luxury mobility. GV90 opens a new chapter for Genesis, building on our track record of bold innovation, elevated customer experiences, and an unwavering commitment to excellence."
Production of the GV90 will take place at Hyundai's state-of-the-art facility in Ulsan, South Korea. The vehicle is slated for a U.S. market launch early next year, becoming Genesis's fourth EV offering in the region. Specific pricing details are expected to be announced closer to its official arrival.
While Genesis has previously offered hybrid or gas-powered variants for models like the GV70 SUV and G80 sedan, the company has not yet indicated if the GV90 will follow suit, aligning with a broader industry slowdown in EV sales in the U.S. following the cessation of federal support, including a $7,500 EV purchase incentive from the previous administration.
The GV90 will be available in two distinct variants: the GV90 Neolun, featuring unique coach doors that open from the vehicle's center, and standard GV90 trims with conventional swing doors. A special "First Edition" will also be offered, boasting exclusive badging, premium wool cashmere, and other luxurious interior appointments. The innovative coach doors, also known as suicide doors, present complex engineering challenges for safety standards, but Genesis asserts it has developed a new structure ensuring the highest safety protocols.
Under the hood, the GV90 boasts a powerful new high-performance electric motor system, delivering an impressive 490 kilowatts (approximately 660 horsepower) and 800 Newton-meters (590 foot-pounds) of torque. Drivers can anticipate an estimated EV range of roughly 310 miles.
The GV90's striking design, characterized by a vehicle-wide dual light signature converging at a central point, was first showcased as the "Neolun" concept vehicle in 2024, setting the stage for its production debut.
Genesis continues to demonstrate strong market performance, with U.S. sales climbing approximately 5% year-over-year to 39,088 units during the first half of this year. This marks 22 consecutive months of impressive year-over-year sales growth for the luxury brand.
