U.S. stock futures are trading near flatlines early Wednesday as investors await the crucial July consumer price index (CPI) report, which is expected to guide the Federal Reserve’s next moves on interest rates.
Strong performances from Super Micro Computer and CoreWeave offered some bright spots in premarket trading, while global markets showed mixed results. All eyes are on the inflation data, with expectations for a modest monthly increase but annual rates still above the Fed’s target.
U.S. stock futures showed slight gains early Wednesday, as investors braced for a pivotal inflation report that is expected to heavily influence the near-term trajectory of interest rates.
S&P 500 futures edged up by 0.13%, and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.29%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose by 20 points, or 0.04%.
Global Markets Mixed Ahead of Key U.S. Data
Asian markets presented a mixed performance. South Korea's Kospi surged over 3%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 added 0.16%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200, however, declined by 0.58%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.98%, contrasting with a 0.28% rise in mainland China's CSI 300.
Corporate Movers: Super Micro Computer and CoreWeave Shine
In U.S. premarket trading, Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares rallied more than 7% following an optimistic outlook for the first quarter. The data center infrastructure company provided strong guidance for earnings and revenue.
CoreWeave (CRWV) shares surged 14% after its second-quarter adjusted operating income margin of 5% surpassed expectations.
Inflation Data in Focus
The market's attention is squarely on the upcoming July consumer price index (CPI) report, due at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists polled by Dow Jones anticipate a modest monthly increase of 0.1% for the headline CPI and 0.2% for the core reading. However, the projected 12-month rates of 3.4% (headline) and 2.5% (core) remain above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.
A hotter-than-expected inflation report could unnerve investors, potentially influencing the Federal Reserve's decision at its September meeting. The central bank has remained focused on inflation, with rising oil prices above $83 a barrel adding to concerns.
"All the Fed seems to be focused on is inflation, which means that tomorrow's report is very important, especially because right now the odds for a September hike are 50-50," Liz Thomas, head of investment strategy at SoFi, told CNBC. "Tomorrow pushes that in one direction or the other, and that gets baked in."
Bond Market Watch
The bond market will also be under scrutiny. The 10-year Treasury yield is hovering around 4.7%, and the 2-year yield is near 4.2%, reflecting existing concerns about a potentially restrictive interest rate environment.
Upcoming Economic and Earnings Events
Beyond the CPI report, the July producer price index (PPI) is due Thursday, which will be crucial to see if the previous month's softer trend continues.
On the earnings front, traders will be watching for reports from Cerebras and Cisco in the afternoon.
