Berlin Pride Attack Suspect Fatally Shot by Police After Ramming Incident

Berlin, Germany - A man suspected of driving a minivan into a crowd near a major LGBTQ Pride gathering in Berlin, an attack that left one person dead and 29 injured, was fatally shot by police on Sunday. The suspect, identified as a 21-year-old known Islamist, was confronted by officers in the city's Spandau district.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time on Saturday near the Brandenburg Gate, close to the annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) event, one of Europe's largest LGBTQ celebrations. According to police statements released on the platform X, the suspect was located at an allotment garden complex in Spandau around 6 p.m. Sunday.

"According to initial findings, he ran towards officers while armed with a bladed weapon; police... subsequently opened fire," Berlin police stated. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A federal prosecutor's spokesperson confirmed the shooting and death.

Authorities had identified the suspect as Abdul B., a German citizen of Lebanese heritage born in Germany in 2005. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt noted that the suspect had a history of criminal offenses and had previously drawn attention due to radicalization and membership in the Islamist scene.

This event marks the latest in a series of vehicle attacks targeting crowds in Germany, fueling ongoing debates about security and immigration. In response to the attack, Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Germans to steadfastly defend the country's liberal values, emphasizing the importance of freedom and openness.
