These proactive steps are in direct response to recommendations from an advisory committee that urged stronger controls against potential insider trading. In an effort to deter illicit activities, traders engaging in specific markets will now be required to disclose their employment details. This move signals Kalshi's commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance in the rapidly evolving landscape of prediction markets.
Introducing Risk Scoring and Enhanced Surveillance
A cornerstone of Kalshi's new strategy is the introduction of a sophisticated risk scoring system. This feature will assign a "risk score" to markets deemed susceptible to insider trading or manipulation. The scoring mechanism will evaluate various factors, including national security concerns and regulatory compliance, to identify high-risk markets.
When a market's risk score reaches a predetermined benchmark, participants will be subject to employment verification before they can execute trades. Kalshi emphasizes that this screening process will occur "before a trade is ever placed," providing a robust pre-trade diligence framework.
Empowering Whistleblowers
In addition to verification measures, Kalshi is enhancing its whistleblower program. The platform will now offer advanced features allowing traders to report suspected abusive trading activities at any time. To facilitate this, Kalshi has developed "internal alerting controls" designed to efficiently collect whistleblower tips and route them to the dedicated surveillance team.
Robert DeNault, Kalshi's Head of Enforcement, stated, "By implementing these new integrity measures, we continue to lead the industry on the issue of market integrity amongst federally regulated prediction markets." He highlighted that the platform has already successfully identified and halted over a hundred potential insider trading incidents in the first quarter using its new screening tools.
The advisory committee is set to continue its work, providing quarterly reports on market integrity. This ongoing oversight underscores Kalshi's dedication to maintaining a fair and secure trading environment.
Disclosure: CNBC and Kalshi have a commercial relationship that includes customer acquisition and a minority investment.
