JPMorgan Chase’s renovation of Chicago’s Chase Tower is now estimated to exceed $800 million, with CEO Jamie Dimon calling it a crucial long-term investment for the revitalization of downtown Chicago.
This substantial local commitment reflects JPMorgan’s broader global strategy of investing heavily in physical office spaces, including major projects like its $4 billion New York City headquarters, a new London tower, and an expanded Philadelphia office.

JPMorgan Chase’s extensive renovation of its iconic Chase Tower in Chicago’s Loop district is now projected to cost the banking giant more than $800 million, according to comments made by CEO Jamie Dimon. This substantial investment is a cornerstone of the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate downtown Chicago, an area significantly impacted by the pandemic's aftermath. The project stands alongside other significant urban renewal initiatives, such as Google's redevelopment of the Thompson Center and numerous office-to-residential conversions along LaSalle Street.
Jamie Dimon emphasized the strategic importance of this endeavor, telling Crain's Chicago Business, “It is a long-term investment. I think it is a symbol of what we have always done.”

When the renovation was initially announced in February 2024, JPMorgan Chase highlighted its expected economic benefits, including $264 million in activity for Cook County and $377 million for the state of Illinois. At that time, a comprehensive cost estimate was not disclosed. The bank currently employs over 14,500 people in the Chicago area, with 7,200 based at Chase Tower.
Construction permits for the project were approved in April 2024, with completion anticipated by mid-to-late 2027. This Chicago project is part of a broader global strategy by JPMorgan to significantly invest in its physical office infrastructure. The bank has been a prominent advocate for a return-to-office approach across its operations worldwide.
Recent initiatives include the announcement earlier this week that JPMorgan will relocate and expand its Philadelphia office at 2400 Market St., adding over 150 jobs and consolidating employees from other locations. In April, the bank secured permission to build an 870-foot, 3 million square-foot tower in London, set to be one of the largest office developments in the UK. Furthermore, JPMorgan opened its 60-story, 2.5 million square-foot global headquarters in New York City last October, a monumental project that cost $4 billion to construct.
