Australian AI data center operator Firmus, a company significantly backed by tech titan Nvidia, has officially withdrawn its highly anticipated mega initial public offering. The decision, communicated to CNBC in an emailed statement, stems from prevailing market volatility and unfavorable market conditions.
Firmus's board meticulously determined that the proposed terms of the offering did not adequately capture the intrinsic strength of its business model or its promising long-term growth trajectory. Consequently, the board concluded that proceeding with the IPO would not serve the best interests of the company and its valued shareholders.
In light of this strategic pivot, Firmus is now poised to actively pursue capital from private markets. The company will also explore a range of alternative public and private market options to secure the necessary funding for its continued expansion and innovation.
The withdrawn IPO was reportedly set to be a landmark event, aiming to raise a substantial $5 billion by pricing shares at A$11 each. Such a successful offering would have positioned it as the second-largest new share sale in Australia's history, valuing the company at an estimated $30.6 billion. This valuation would have marked a significant jump from its approximate $10.5 billion valuation recorded in August of the previous year.
Firmus has garnered considerable investor confidence, highlighted by a $2 billion funding round announced in August, which saw participation from prominent firms including Nvidia, Coatue Management, Blackstone, and Jane Street. This round brought its total equity raised over the preceding year to an impressive figure exceeding $3 billion.
Further solidifying its market position, Firmus recently announced strategic agreements with Meta. These collaborations involve providing critical GPU computing capacity at Firmus's AI data centers across Southeast Asia, leveraging Nvidia's cutting-edge DSX platform, to bolster Meta's advanced AI research, model development, and training initiatives.
