U.S. stock futures are trading flat, indicating a cautious start to the trading day as markets grapple with rising Treasury yields. The 10-year Treasury yield has surpassed 5.2%, a level not seen since 2007, raising concerns about persistent inflation and potential further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
Asian markets closed mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi lower, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 posted gains. European shares opened higher, suggesting a more positive sentiment in that region.
Investors are closely watching upcoming economic data, including consumer confidence and labor market figures, for further clues on the economic outlook.
U.S. stock futures showed little movement in early trading on Tuesday, as investors sought to rebound after a session marked by declines in equities driven by rising Treasury yields. The pressure from increasing bond yields continues to be a dominant theme in market sentiment.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures saw a slight dip of 0.12%, while S&P 500 futures fell by 0.7%. Nasdaq-100 futures also edged lower, down 0.04%. This follows a trading day where the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped over 300 points, the S&P 500 shed 0.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.9%.
The macroeconomic backdrop remains challenging, with Treasury yields continuing their upward trajectory. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield ended the day above 5.2%, a level not seen since 2007, and the 30-year yield topped 5.56%, nearing a 2004 high. This trend is fueled by investor concerns over persistent inflation potentially leading to further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
Brent Schutte, CIO at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, commented, "Despite the economy's broad-based strength, equity markets are seemingly worrying about the potential future consequences of higher interest rates, with daily moves in rates increasingly driving overall market performance." He added that while bonds offer more attractive entry points, the Federal Reserve's actions on inflation remain a key factor.
Investors are awaiting new economic data that could influence Treasury yields. The September reading on U.S. consumer confidence is scheduled for release at 10 a.m. ET, along with the August jobs opening and labor turnover survey.

International Markets Show Mixed Performance
Asian markets presented a varied picture on Tuesday. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1.11%, and the Topix fell 1.67%. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.4%, while the Kosdaq was down 0.78%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index decreased by 0.57%, and the CSI 300 was 0.29% lower. In contrast, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 managed a slight gain of 0.1%.
European markets opened higher, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index up nearly 0.4% in early trading. The FTSE 100 in London also saw a 0.3% increase.
In other news, Spain's annual inflation rate rose to 4.9% in September, its highest level since early 2023, according to flash data. This increase is attributed partly to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on energy prices.
