China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is reportedly considering allowing tech giants ByteDance and Alibaba to purchase Nvidia’s RTX PRO 5500 chips. This potential move could signify an exemption from U.S. export restrictions for certain high-end hardware.
Nvidia has noted ongoing restrictions affecting U.S. firms, while major Chinese companies and the government have yet to comment. The situation highlights the complex interplay between technology, global trade, and international policy.
China Considers Nvidia Chip Sales to ByteDance, Alibaba Amid Tech Restrictions
The Chinese government is reportedly weighing a significant policy shift that could permit domestic tech giants like ByteDance and Alibaba to acquire advanced Nvidia chips designed for high-end professional computers. This potential move, reported by The Information on Sunday and citing sources familiar with the matter, suggests a possible easing of restrictions on critical technology imports.

According to the report, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has proactively solicited purchase plans for Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 chips from prominent companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba. Industry insiders anticipate that this specific chip model may be exempt from existing U.S. export controls, which have previously impacted the flow of high-performance computing hardware to China.
An Nvidia spokesperson commented on the situation, noting that "US firms continue to be restricted by a combination of outdated US export controls, which cover gaming products released nearly half a decade ago, and China's own limits on US imports." Both Alibaba and ByteDance have not yet responded to requests for comment, and the Chinese government has also not immediately been reachable for comment.
This development comes amid ongoing global discussions and actions surrounding semiconductor technology and its strategic importance in international relations. The potential approval of these chip purchases could signal a nuanced approach by China to balancing its domestic technological development needs with international trade regulations.
