SoftBank Group shares surged over 7% on Thursday, marking a strong rebound as Japanese markets reopened after a three-day holiday. The surge was driven by the technology investor's announcement of an $11.1 billion bond issuance, a strategic move designed to bolster its significant investment in artificial intelligence leader OpenAI.
The company revealed the issuance of $10 billion in dollar-denominated senior notes and 1 billion euros ($1.14 billion) in euro-denominated notes. These funds are earmarked for a critical $10 billion payment, representing the third and final tranche of its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI. This substantial payment is slated to be finalized by October 1st, further cementing SoftBank's commitment to the AI powerhouse.
The bond sale highlights the ambitious scale of SoftBank's CEO Masayoshi Son's vision for artificial intelligence. The total investment in OpenAI, agreed upon in February, will bring SoftBank's cumulative investment to a staggering $64.6 billion, securing an approximate 13% stake upon completion. This move comes at a time when investors are closely watching SoftBank's financing strategies for its AI endeavors and the potential impact of increased leverage on its financial standing.
