Meta has become a new focal point for options traders, recognized as a leading consumer AI play, evidenced by a dramatic surge in options trading volume and a significant bullish bias. This intense market activity follows the successful launch of Meta’s Muse AI personal assistant, which has rapidly accumulated 730,000 downloads, fueling a 21% rally in the company’s stock.
Options traders are signaling Meta as their new favorite contender in the burgeoning consumer artificial intelligence (AI) sector. On a recent Monday, trading volume for Meta options skyrocketed to approximately 4.5 times its typical 30-day average, with a staggering $3.9 billion in total premium exchanged, according to detailed analytics from Cboe LiveVol and SpotGamma.
The market's bullish tilt was undeniable: call options were likely purchased at more than double the rate of put options. Further indicating strong positive sentiment, seven out of the top ten trades executed were either bullish or neutral in nature.
Shares of the social media giant experienced a significant leap, surging 12% on Monday. This impressive performance brought the stock within 7% of its all-time high recorded in August 2025 (likely a forward-looking or typographical error in the original article), building on an existing 21-percent rally since the company first unveiled details of its innovative personal assistant, Muse. In parallel, Meta also announced its ambitious plan to develop 'Petal,' a new subsea cable designed to enhance data transmission across the Atlantic ocean.
Among the most actively traded options contracts were zero-day-to-expiry options with strikes now firmly in the money, spanning from 720 to 745. Looking further ahead, there was substantial volume in 775 and 800-strike options scheduled to expire in mid-October.
Brent Kochuba, the insightful founder of options analytics platform SpotGamma, highlighted the phenomenon: "The inflows in options are huge. It seems like AI hype around their Muse."
Meta's Muse AI personal agent tool, which launched just shy of two weeks ago on September 8th, has quickly ascended app store rankings. It garnered an impressive 730,000 downloads over approximately five days post-launch, as reported by CNBC, citing data from analytics firm Sensor Tower.
SpotGamma data further revealed that over $1.3 billion in call premium traded was likely initiated by eager call-buyers, contrasted with roughly $1.1 billion tied to selling. This dynamic suggests a robust bullish bias, albeit balanced by some strategic hedging. Notably, the session's largest dollar-size trader reportedly established a net $20 million short position through a series of spread trades, predominantly involving the sale of a one-by-two 710/765-strike call spread set to expire on October 16th, which would profit if Meta's stock dips below $740.
