In a market increasingly dominated by the artificial intelligence boom, Goldman Sachs is advising investors to look towards China's thriving healthcare sector for compelling growth opportunities. Recent analysis from the firm's portfolio strategy research team indicates that nearly half of the companies within the MSCI China index surpassed earnings expectations in the second quarter, with healthcare and IT sectors leading the charge.
Chinese corporate earnings have demonstrated remarkable strength, with Goldman Sachs tracking a significant 24% year-over-year growth in the second quarter, a substantial acceleration from the 6% growth seen in the first quarter. While artificial intelligence has been a primary driver globally, Goldman Sachs suggests that as AI-related stocks become more concentrated, investors are seeking diversification into downstream sectors.
The research highlights that management and investor discussions are expanding beyond the core AI hardware and semiconductor industries to encompass application areas such as data centers, AI models, automotive, and crucially, healthcare. To identify potential investment opportunities, Goldman Sachs screened its buy-rated Chinese companies, focusing on those with projected annual earnings growth exceeding 15% through 2027 and a median increase of 7% in earnings per share estimates over the past month.
The healthcare sector, particularly pharmaceutical companies, emerged as a strong contender, making up one-third of the twelve companies that met the stringent criteria. Among the highlighted names are:
- Innovent Biologics (Suzhou): Expected to more than double its earnings in the coming year, with Goldman's estimates significantly higher than the consensus. The company boasts a pipeline of treatments for cancer and metabolic diseases.
- BeOne Medicines (Shanghai): Also anticipated to see its earnings more than double within the next year. This cancer treatment developer is listed in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and on the Nasdaq.
- CSPC (Hong Kong-listed): Projected to achieve 26% earnings growth, driven by its core businesses in nervous system and cardiovascular drugs.
- Hansoh Pharma (Hong Kong-listed): Forecasted to grow earnings by 15%, with its product portfolio covering metabolic treatments and cancer therapies.
Goldman Sachs anticipates that the earnings growth of these four companies, if realized, would surpass their more conservative forecast for the broader MSCI China index, which they expect to grow by 8% this year, compared to the consensus of 17%.
