Gold has seen a remarkable 15% surge this month, defying expectations by rising alongside interest rates and heading for its best performance since 2008. However, a massive options trade in the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) suggests this rally might be topping out.
A trader reportedly closed a lucrative in-the-money call option position and rolled into a less aggressive one, potentially signaling caution ahead of key economic data releases and the Jackson Hole symposium.
Massive Gold Options Trade Signals Potential End to Rally, Options Market Buzzes
Gold has surged 15% this month, marking its best performance since 2008, despite rising interest rates. However, a colossal options trade in SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) suggests this upward trajectory may be nearing its peak. This significant move in the options market is drawing attention as key economic events loom.
Options Action: Gold's huge month
In a dramatic move within the options market, a trader reportedly sold 116,000 out-of-the-money calls for SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) expiring September 18th. These calls, which were in-the-money, netted the trader approximately $202 million. Subsequently, the trader reinvested a portion of these funds into an equal number of 430-strike calls with the same expiration, costing $144 million. This maneuver resulted in a net gain of $58 million and effectively "rolled" the position into a more conservative, yet still bullish, stance.
While the new position maintains a bullish outlook, its reduced scale is interpreted by some analysts as a potential sign of waning confidence from a major player in the GLD ETF's recent trading history. This occurs just ahead of a crucial week for macroeconomic data, including the release of Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation figures on Wednesday and the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium commencing Thursday.
Nigam Arora, founder of The Arora Report, commented on the situation, stating, "The probability is very high that gold sees a short-term pullback." He observed a divergence between "momentum-crowd flows" remaining bullish and "smart-money flows" turning negative, noting approximately $60 million in negative net money flow for GLD on the day.
This significant options activity comes even as Gold prices have climbed despite increasing interest rates and rising real yields, a scenario that typically pressures non-yielding assets like gold. Data from ThinkOrSwim and SpotGamma indicate that the majority of other options trades in GLD on Monday leaned heavily bullish, with calls significantly outnumbering puts among the top traded contracts. Cboe LiveVol data revealed that GLD ETF volume was on pace for nearly five times its 30-day average, largely driven by this substantial call spread.
(Correction: The article has been updated to clarify that the GLD trade involved taking profits on the 420-strike calls rather than opening a new position.)
