Nvidia is reportedly in advanced talks to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group Corp. This significant investment is tied to a massive planned data center project in Ohio that will be developed for OpenAI, according to a report by The Information. The proposed funding is a crucial component of broader discussions involving Nvidia, OpenAI, and SB Energy to secure approximately $100 billion in credit support for the ambitious Ohio data center campus.
The Information suggests that Nvidia's investment could be structured in two tranches: half upon the signing of the Ohio project deal and the remaining half as part of SB Energy's anticipated initial public offering (IPO). SB Energy is reportedly aiming for an IPO as early as next month, with expectations to raise at least $5 billion.
SB Energy, which also receives backing from OpenAI, specializes in developing large-scale power and data center infrastructure. Founded in 2019, the company is actively constructing multiple data center campuses to meet the escalating demand driven by AI workloads.
This news follows a Wall Street Journal report from Friday indicating that Nvidia has revised its commitment to the OpenAI data center project in Ohio. The initial guarantee is now expected to be less than $120 billion, a reduction from the previously discussed $250 billion.
Reuters has not independently verified the report. Nvidia and SB Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside of regular business hours.
