President Donald Trump has declared the current negotiations with Iran as the “last chance” to end the conflict, stating talks are ongoing at Iran’s request. However, Tehran continues to deny any direct diplomatic engagement with the U.S., creating market uncertainty.
This mixed messaging has led to a rebound in oil prices, with WTI and Brent crude futures seeing gains early Tuesday after an initial slump. Investors remain watchful for further developments in the escalating geopolitical tensions.
Washington D.C. - President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning, labeling the ongoing diplomatic negotiations with Iran as the "last chance" to de-escalate the simmering conflict. The president revealed in the Oval Office on Monday evening that talks are currently underway, initiated at the behest of Iran and several regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

However, these pronouncements stand in stark contrast to Tehran's official stance. Iranian officials have consistently denied any direct negotiations with the United States, past, present, or future. President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Tuesday that while Iran remains committed to defending its borders, it does not seek an expansion of the conflict, according to state media reports.
"This is a last chance for them to sign a good document," Trump reiterated, emphasizing the perceived urgency. This statement follows a Truth Social post from earlier on Monday where Trump characterized Iran's leadership as "unbelievably duplicitous" and accused them of deliberately misrepresenting the status of peace talks, asserting, "whether Iran wants to admit it or not."
Oil Price Fluctuations
Oil prices rebounded slightly early Tuesday as uncertainty surrounding the diplomatic efforts grew.
Adding to the diplomatic confusion, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei reiterated on Monday that there are no immediate plans for negotiations with the U.S. He clarified that Tehran's current discussions are solely with Oman, focusing on matters pertaining to the Strait of Hormuz.
The market initially reacted positively to news earlier in the week suggesting a potential de-escalation, with oil prices dropping significantly after President Trump announced the cancellation of "massive attacks" on Iran to facilitate ongoing talks. However, the subsequent denial of direct negotiations by Iran caused a reversal, with oil prices ticking upward on Tuesday.
As of 1:35 a.m. ET, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures had climbed 1.29% to $81.38 per barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, saw a similar increase of 1.73%, reaching $85.23 a barrel.
In related maritime security news, U.S. Central Command reported on Monday the redirection of 44 commercial vessels as part of its continued operations in the Strait of Hormuz, following the disabling and boarding of two vessels. Separately, reports from the Iraqi pro-militia outlet Naya late Monday indicated an explosion in Kuwait overnight, reportedly audible in the Basrah Province.
