Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) recently announced its latest financial results, revealing an incredibly robust second quarter. The tech giant's earnings per share (EPS) surged by an astounding 294% year-over-year, hitting $9.11. This impressive bottom line wasn't just a reflection of its strong core business operations; it also received a significant boost from non-operating gains, specifically its strategic investments.
A major contributor to Alphabet's stellar performance was the substantial appreciation in the value of its stake in Space Exploration Technologies Corp., better known as SpaceX. However, while these gains were considerable, they introduce a notable vulnerability for Alphabet. The recent struggles and significant valuation drop of the space stock could lead to substantial losses for Alphabet in the upcoming quarter.

Alphabet's Q2 Profit Boosted by Nearly $100 Billion in Other Income
Alphabet holds substantial equity stakes in both Anthropic and SpaceX, companies at the forefront of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. While Anthropic, with its Claude chatbot, is a direct AI play, AI also presents a colossal opportunity for SpaceX, representing the majority of its estimated $28.5 trillion total addressable market ($26.5 trillion). This strategic positioning has paid off handsomely.
During Alphabet's second quarter, which concluded on June 30, the company's pre-tax profit soared to nearly $139 billion, a stark contrast to just under $34 billion a year prior. A significant driver of this monumental increase was the nearly $98 billion reported in net other income, dramatically influencing the overall financial picture.
Specifically, within its other income and expenses, Alphabet recorded gains on equity securities totaling just over $99 billion. The company attributed these gains primarily to unrealized appreciation in its equity securities portfolio, stemming from its investments in SpaceX and an undisclosed private company.
SpaceX's Recent Plunge Poses a Threat to Alphabet's Current Quarter
The impressive gains from SpaceX in Q2, however, are now overshadowed by recent market performance. On June 30, SpaceX's stock closed at nearly $171. Yet, as of last week, its value had plummeted to under $109, with indications it might soon drop below $100.
This rapid decline in just one month is substantial, suggesting that investors are re-evaluating the space stock's high valuation. If Alphabet's previous quarter saw a significant positive impact from its SpaceX investment, the current third quarter could experience the inverse. This is particularly concerning if SpaceX's valuation does not recover meaningfully within the next couple of months.
While Alphabet remains a top-tier growth stock, investors must exercise caution when assessing its price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple. The current P/E ratio, sitting at a seemingly attractive 18, is based on unadjusted earnings that can be heavily skewed by the volatile performance of investments like SpaceX. This could make Alphabet appear to be a much better bargain than its underlying operational performance might suggest.
