Lukas Walton, grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton, along with his wife Samantha, has officially acquired a minority stake in the iconic NBA franchise, the Chicago Bulls, and the multi-purpose arena, the United Center. The announcement was made by the team on Friday, marking a significant investment from the prominent Walton family.
The transaction involved the purchase of existing shares from several limited partners, ensuring that the Reinsdorf family maintains its controlling ownership of the Chicago Bulls. Despite the acquisition, the agreement does not grant Walton a path to controlling interest in the team. While the exact size of the minority stake and its valuation were not publicly disclosed, a source close to the matter informed CNBC that the Waltons have secured a 10% share in both the team and the arena.
Jerry Reinsdorf, who originally bought the Chicago Bulls for a mere $16.2 million in 1985, continues to lead the franchise. Today, the Bulls are estimated to be worth approximately $6.45 billion, according to CNBC's latest NBA valuations, making them the fifth most valuable team in the league. The United Center, which hosts both the Bulls and the NHL's Blackhawks, will continue to be co-controlled by the Wirtz and Reinsdorf families. They also retain their controlling interest in The 1901 Project, a substantial $7 billion redevelopment initiative located on Chicago's West Side.
Historically, the Chicago Bulls have enjoyed immense success, notably securing six NBA championships during the legendary Michael Jordan era. However, the team has faced challenges in recent years, failing to qualify for the playoffs since the 2021-2022 season.

Lukas Walton, 39, a resident of Chicago, is known for his significant net worth, reported by Forbes to be around $45 billion. He and Samantha expressed their enthusiasm for the investment, stating, "The Chicago Bulls are as iconic as the city itself, and this transaction reflects our dedication to the city's future. We have long admired the vision the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families have set forth for The 1901 Project, and we look forward to the United Center's continued positive impact on Chicago's West Side."
This move follows a trend within the Walton family, as Lukas's uncle, Rob Walton, previously acquired the NFL's Denver Broncos in 2022 and also holds an interest in MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks.
