President Donald Trump has declared that he no longer views the artificial intelligence company Anthropic as a national security threat, a significant shift from his previous stance, according to an interview with "The Axios Show" released on Friday.
Earlier in the week, senior technical staff from Anthropic were slated to engage with Trump administration officials to address a disagreement concerning foreign access to the company's cutting-edge AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Last week, Anthropic temporarily suspended access to these models for all users following a directive from President Trump to restrict foreign nationals from utilizing them.
When questioned about whether he perceived Anthropic or its CEO, Dario Amodei, as a national security risk, Trump stated, "Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe." He acknowledged that Amodei had responded to the administration's export control order "very quickly" and "responsibly."
President Trump and other G7 leaders convened with prominent tech executives, including Amodei, during a summit held in France this week. Despite his softened stance, Trump did not entirely dismiss the possibility of invoking emergency measures under the Defense Production Act against Anthropic, noting, "I have the power to use a lot of things... But I'm not sure I have to do that."
In response to President Trump's interview, an Anthropic spokesperson expressed gratitude for the administration's collaborative efforts in resolving the issue promptly. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with the administration to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure American leadership in the field of AI.
