The U.S. military has conducted strikes on multiple Iranian targets under President Trump’s directive, significantly escalating regional tensions. In response, Kuwait closed its airspace, and Israel issued warnings of potential launches from Lebanon. This development follows weeks of heightened rhetoric and a perceived impasse in negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
President Trump previously warned of severe repercussions for Iran if negotiations failed, and the strikes have led to a surge in oil prices and a drop in U.S. stock futures.
In a significant escalation of Middle East tensions, the United States military has completed strikes on multiple targets within Iran, acting directly on the orders of President Donald Trump. This action follows a period of heightened rhetoric and a perceived deadlock in negotiations between the two nations.
Kuwait announced the closure of its airspace on Thursday local time, citing "Iranian aggressions" and the interception of "hostile aerial targets." Simultaneously, Israel's Home Front Command issued warnings of potential launches from Lebanon targeting northern Israel, indicating a widening regional impact.
According to Iran's state-run Tasnim news agency, Iran reported striking and destroying "eighteen important targets" belonging to U.S. forces at Kuwait's Ali Salem and Ahmad al-Jaber air bases, as well as the Sheikh Issa air base in Bahrain. Bahrain's government confirmed its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed "Iranian aerial attacks," urging civilians to seek safety.
President Trump: We're going to hit Iran hard today
The U.S. Central Command confirmed strikes were completed Wednesday evening ET, targeting Iranian military surveillance capabilities, communication systems, and air defense sites. These actions were described as responses to "Iran's unwarranted and continued aggression" and threats to U.S. forces and international commercial shipping in regional waters.
Earlier, Iranian state media reported missile and drone attacks on U.S. ships in the Strait of Hormuz, with Reuters later reporting a complete closure of the strait by Iran's top military command. President Trump stated he had spoken with Iranian officials who requested a halt to the strikes, indicating a potential pause but leaving the door open for further action. He characterized the situation by stating it was the "most violated ceasefire in history."
The escalation follows President Trump's earlier public threats to hit Iran "very hard" again, pressing Tehran to sign a deal. In a White House event, Trump declared, "We hit them hard yesterday, and we're going to hit them hard again today." He emphasized the desire for a "meaningful and working" agreement.
Responding to the U.S. actions, Iran's parliamentary national security commission head warned that "this time, the war won't be limited to the region." These comments echo Trump's earlier warning on Truth Social that Iran had taken too long to negotiate and would "pay the price."
The heightened tensions saw a rise in oil prices, with U.S. crude climbing nearly 2% and Brent rising 1.3%. U.S. stock futures fell, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping over 600 points since Trump's initial remarks.
President Trump reiterated his assertion that oil prices would decline once the situation is resolved. The recent strikes come after U.S. forces attacked Iran in response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter, an act for which Iran has not directly claimed responsibility.
