The fragile ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. is in jeopardy as reports emerge of Iran firing missiles at Israel, which has since retaliated with strikes on Iranian military targets. This escalation follows claims by Iran that U.S. actions have violated the terms of the ceasefire, complicating ongoing negotiations and regional stability.
President Trump has been briefed on the situation, and tensions rise as Iran issues warnings of broader responses if aggressions continue, while some officials suggest Trump may have underestimated Iran’s resolve.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have dramatically escalated, with reports of missile exchanges threatening a fragile ceasefire that has been in place since early April. The latest developments come amid claims from Iran that violations of the ceasefire, including a U.S. naval blockade and agreements concerning Lebanon, have occurred.

Iran reportedly fired missiles at Israel on Sunday, prompting retaliatory strikes from Israel against Iranian military targets. The Iranian Parliamentary Speaker, MB Ghalibaf, asserted on X that the U.S. actions constituted breaches of the ceasefire. The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump was briefed on the renewed hostilities.
Axios reported that President Trump intended to contact Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to refrain from retaliatory strikes. However, Israel proceeded with its own counter-attacks.
Ghalibaf further stated that military activities in Lebanon and the ongoing U.S. blockade rendered "American and regime bases and assets in the region into legitimate targets." The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the missile launches from Iran and announced that they had "struck military targets belonging to the Iranian terror regime in western and central Iran a short while ago."

President Trump commented to Fox News that the missile attacks would "certainly not go to help negotiations." In a statement to The New York Times, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared the ceasefire was "conditional on a cease-fire on all fronts" and warned that "tonight's operation was a warning, and if aggressions are repeated, the responses will be broader."
A White House official, speaking anonymously, suggested that Trump underestimated Iran's willingness to reignite the conflict, characterizing Iran's behavior as "erratic" and leaving the president in a difficult position.
In a subsequent conversation with the Financial Times, Trump expressed confidence that Netanyahu would have to accept a U.S.-negotiated deal with Iran, asserting, "the U.S. president 'calls the shots.'" However, an Iranian official close to the talks indicated that "a deal with President Trump is no longer feasible at this stage," blaming Trump for the situation in Lebanon and the current escalation.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon has complicated the peace efforts. Iran is demanding an end to hostilities in Lebanon and the lifting of the U.S. blockade, while the U.S. seeks Iran's commitment to never obtain nuclear weapons.
Reports suggest the Trump administration is considering redirecting Iranian assets to Gulf states to compensate for damages from Iranian strikes. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi countered these reports on X, stating that regional governments were not in a position to demand reparations and that Iran's assets were not war spoils or a payment fund for allies.
