A cornerstone of Black Hills' growth strategy is a landmark agreement with tech giant Google, involving a planned $1.8 billion investment. This collaboration will see Black Hills develop 564 megawatts of gas generation capacity and manage a private microgrid to support Google's data center operations. The financial projections for this partnership are robust, with Black Hills estimating approximately $150 million in net income by 2030 and an impressive $2.4 billion in unlevered free cash flow extending through 2048. This strategic alliance underscores the growing demand for reliable and efficient energy solutions in the rapidly expanding data center market.
Beyond the Google deal, Black Hills is actively exploring additional opportunities to serve data center load, reflecting a proactive approach to capitalize on this high-growth sector. The company also plans significant infrastructure enhancements, with an estimated investment of $700 million in transmission projects by 2029 to bolster its grid capabilities and ensure robust service delivery.
In parallel, Black Hills is steadily advancing its proposed merger with NorthWestern Energy. The acquisition has garnered six of the seven necessary regulatory approvals, with only a decision from Montana pending. Successful completion of this merger would further expand Black Hills' operational footprint and customer base, solidifying its position as a key player in the regional utilities landscape. These combined efforts highlight Black Hills' multi-faceted strategy for sustained financial performance and market expansion.
