OpenAI has reportedly scaled back its ambitious funding goals, now aiming to raise up to $20 billion, a decrease from its initial $30 billion target. This strategic adjustment occurs against a backdrop of a significant tech sector downturn and heightened investor scrutiny over the substantial investments being poured into artificial intelligence.
The current funding round values the AI pioneer at approximately $1.25 trillion post-money, and it’s being led by investors from the United Arab Emirates and Coatue. This move signals a more cautious investment climate, even for leading AI firms, as the market recalibrates expectations for AI-driven returns.
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse behind ChatGPT, is reportedly seeking to raise up to $20 billion in its latest funding round, a significant reduction from its initial target of $30 billion. This adjustment comes as the broader technology sector experiences a selloff and investors scrutinize spending on AI initiatives.

The current funding round, which is still open and subject to change, values OpenAI at approximately $1.25 trillion on a post-money basis, according to reports. The reduction in the funding target reflects a challenging market environment for tech companies, particularly those investing heavily in AI infrastructure like data centers and graphics processing units (GPUs).
This development follows a week of turbulence in AI-linked stocks. Major players such as Intel, Micron, and Nvidia saw significant drops in their share prices. Intel, in particular, experienced a 25% decline following a less-than-stellar revenue forecast. Similarly, Micron fell by 5.5%, and Nvidia by 4%.
Tech giants including Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), and Amazon have also been making substantial investments in AI infrastructure. However, recent capital expenditure forecasts from these companies have fallen short of analyst expectations. Alphabet's stock endured its worst trading day ever after its search revenue missed targets, with a company executive citing lower monetization within its AI Mode as a contributing factor.
Investors from the United Arab Emirates are reportedly leading this funding round, alongside Coatue. OpenAI has not yet commented on the funding round specifics.
