Robinhood's stock saw a 4% drop in after-hours trading as the company released its third-quarter earnings report. Despite meeting revenue expectations and showcasing growth in key areas like options trading and event contracts, a significant slump in cryptocurrency revenue weighed on overall profitability.
The brokerage firm announced total revenue of $1.42 billion, a 12% increase year-over-year, matching Wall Street's predictions. Transaction-based revenue climbed 19% to $867 million, largely fueled by a more than 500% surge in event contracts and a 31% rise in options revenue. Equities trading also saw a healthy 41% increase.
However, this positive momentum was partially countered by a 55% decline in cryptocurrency revenue, which fell to $120 million. This downturn highlights the continued impact of the broader crypto market slump on Robinhood's financial performance.
In an effort to diversify beyond volatile trading activity, Robinhood has been investing in expanding its platform into a comprehensive financial services ecosystem. Initiatives in wealth management and subscriptions are part of this strategy, aiming to create more stable revenue streams.
Net income for the quarter stood at $468 million, or 51 cents per share, down from $556 million, or 61 cents per share, in the same period last year. While earnings per share of 51 cents fell short of the 56 cents expected by analysts, overall revenue met the consensus forecast.
Despite the mixed results and the dip in share price, Robinhood reported substantial net deposits, totaling $15.7 billion for the quarter, indicating continued user engagement and platform growth. The company emphasized that event contracts on crypto movements performed well, providing investors an alternative way to engage with the crypto market even amidst price volatility.
