Netflix reported third-quarter earnings per share exceeding Wall Street expectations and revenue in line with estimates. However, the streaming giant’s stock saw a decline after issuing fourth-quarter and full-year guidance that was perceived as cautious, particularly concerning its advertising revenue projections.
The company lowered its full-year ad revenue forecast and acknowledged a slower-than-expected rollout of ad product capabilities. Recent organizational changes, including layoffs and leadership shifts, are also under scrutiny as investors seek strategic clarity amid increased competition.
Netflix Q3 Earnings Beat Expectations, but Shares Dip on Cautious Guidance
Netflix announced third-quarter financial results that exceeded Wall Street's earnings per share estimates, with revenue matching analyst expectations. Despite the earnings beat, the streaming giant's shares experienced a decline following the release of its fourth-quarter and full-year guidance, which indicated slower-than-anticipated growth in key areas like advertising revenue.
Financial Performance Highlights
Netflix reported third-quarter earnings per share of 87 cents, surpassing the LSEG consensus estimate of 82 cents. Revenue for the period came in at $12.87 billion, exactly in line with analysts' predictions. The company's revenue saw a year-over-year increase of nearly 12%, attributed to subscriber growth and the impact of subscription price increases implemented in March.
Net income for the quarter reached $3.66 billion, or 87 cents per share, a significant jump from $2.55 billion, or 59 cents per share, recorded in the same period last year. The company cited the timing of expenses as a contributing factor to the increased profit.
Future Outlook and Guidance
Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, Netflix projects revenue growth of over 11%, estimating it to reach $13.44 billion. This forecast is driven by anticipated increases in membership, pricing, and advertising revenue.
However, the company revised its full-year 2026 forecast, now expecting revenue to be around $51.1 billion, representing a 13% increase year-over-year. This revised outlook is at the lower end of its previous range and slightly below Wall Street's consensus of $51.2 billion.
Shares of Netflix experienced a downturn, falling approximately 6% in extended trading following the release of this guidance.
Advertising Business and Strategy
A key focus for investors is Netflix's burgeoning advertising business. The company announced it is lowering its full-year revenue guidance for its ad segment to approximately $2.7 billion, down from a previous forecast of around $3 billion. This downward revision is due to a slower-than-anticipated rollout of certain advertising product capabilities.
Co-CEO Greg Peters acknowledged that while the ad business has shown impressive growth, the company is currently behind its aggressive annual targets. He noted that the development of their advertising stack has been rapid but acknowledged the shortfall in meeting year-end goals.
In an effort to bolster the ad business, Netflix also announced new features for advertisers aimed at improving audience targeting and ad performance measurement. The company reiterated its commitment to accelerating growth through enhancing member value, leveraging technology, and improving monetization.
Organizational Changes and Investor Concerns
The company's recent organizational changes, including layoffs impacting about 6% of its workforce and a shift in content leadership with the departure of Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria from that role, are also drawing investor attention. The company anticipates these reductions will negatively impact its operating margin by approximately 120 basis points in the fourth quarter.
Peter Rice, a former Disney executive, has been appointed as the new Chief Content Officer. Investors are keen to understand how these strategic shifts will address concerns regarding viewership growth. While acknowledging investor worries about view hours growth, Netflix emphasized that overall engagement, encompassing the quantity, quality, and variety of viewing, remains healthy.
