Netflix has announced a major leadership change, with Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria departing after nearly a decade. She will be replaced by Peter Rice, a highly experienced executive from Disney and 21st Century Fox, effective October 26. This transition follows recent layoffs at Netflix and precedes the company’s upcoming quarterly earnings report.
In a significant leadership change at the streaming giant, Netflix has announced the departure of its Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, after nearly a decade with the company. Bajaria will be succeeded by Peter Rice, a seasoned entertainment executive who previously held prominent roles at Disney and 21st Century Fox, with his appointment effective October 26.
Bajaria's tenure at Netflix saw her lead the global content team and play a key role in developing the company's burgeoning live events strategy, aiming to transform popular games and tournaments into compelling viewer experiences.
Peter Rice brings a wealth of experience to his new role. At Disney, he oversaw a vast portfolio including cable channels, news programming, and the coverage of major live sporting events. Prior to his time at Disney, Rice was a respected creative executive at 21st Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos lauded the incoming executive, stating, "Peter is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry. I'm excited to welcome him to Netflix as Chief Content Officer as we continue to scale and deliver members more of the stories they love."
In his new capacity, Rice will be responsible for Netflix's entire global content organization, encompassing scripted and unscripted series, feature films, and live events. His appointment signals a strategic move for the company's future content direction.
Rice expressed his eagerness to join, noting that "[Netflix has] shown again and again that they're willing to take chances on distinctive voices and fresh ideas, and I'm excited to work with the team to help bring even more great stories to members everywhere."
Sarandos also extended gratitude to the outgoing Bajaria, saying, "I'm incredibly grateful for everything she's done to help Netflix entertain the world."
This executive transition comes shortly after Netflix announced layoffs, reducing its workforce by approximately 6%, affecting about 1,000 jobs. Despite these organizational changes, Netflix shares remained relatively unchanged in extended trading on Thursday, though the stock has seen a more than 20% decline this year.
The company is set to report its next quarterly earnings on Tuesday, a release that will be closely monitored by investors for insights into Netflix's performance and future strategies.
