Russian internet giant Yandex has suspended operations at a key data center in Sasovo, Ryazan, after a drone strike caused a fire. While the company assures that its core services remain operational, the affected data center has ceased all activity, potentially impacting service availability.
This event is part of a broader pattern of Ukraine escalating attacks on Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries and major retail platforms, amidst the ongoing conflict.
Yandex Data Center Suffers Drone Strike, Operations Halted
Russia's leading internet conglomerate, Yandex, has been forced to halt operations at a major data center following a drone attack. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, caused a fire at the facility located in Sasovo, Ryazan, in western Russia. While the company confirmed that its core services remained unaffected, the data center itself has ceased all operations, potentially leading to temporary unavailability of some Yandex services for users.

Yandex stated that there were no casualties and that emergency services were promptly on the scene to manage the situation. The company, often referred to as Russia's 'Google,' provides the nation's most popular search engine and has also developed advanced AI capabilities, including its generative AI model, YandexGPT.
Although Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack on the Yandex data center, it aligns with a recent escalation in Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian infrastructure. Over the past few months, Ukraine has intensified its efforts to disrupt Russian operations, with a particular focus on oil refineries, which Kyiv argues are used to fund the ongoing conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated a strategy to "double down" on attacks against Russian oil facilities in response to Moscow's airstrikes.
This incident also follows previous Ukrainian actions against other key Russian infrastructure, including the online retail giant Wildberries, highlighting a broader strategy to impact Russia's economic and logistical networks.
